We had the good fortune of connecting with Derrick Fowler and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Derrick, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my success is my clients or shall I say my Cake family. I always say that without their support I don’t exist and that is the God’s honest truth. My goal is to make sure that every order that I make is done to make the client feel special. I started this journey 15 years ago with the goal to have my own storefront one day. For the last 4 years I have been in overdrive building my name so that the brand is something that is recognized with quality, professionalism, and a caring attitude toward anyone I come in contact with. My name is on every product I make which means my reputation is on every product I deliver. If you give the customer honest top quality service and respect they will give it back and hopefully feel comfortable recommending my services to their friends and family.

Derrick’s Cake Delights specializes in alcohol infused cakes, cookies and cheesecakes that allow clients to enjoy the drink and dessert at the same time. I chose this niche because I at the time really didn’t hear about a lot of bakeries that specialize in this category. Choosing the right flavors took a lot of trial and error to get mix of flavors for a menu selection. At the same time because of my love for sweet potato, I introduced that in the form of cake and cheesecake which was an immediate hit and then spiced it up with rum to go to a whole extra level. I have also been able to get creative and design a unique series of desserts that I call my Diva Series which is half cake and half cheesecake. This series has grown to be very successful and has helped me win Best Desserts 2 years in a row 2018 and 2019 at the Family Food Fest in Atlanta which is held on fathers day each year. I also won Best Desserts in 2015 at Taste of The Runway in Atlanta. The lessons I’ve learned is to always keep business, business and keep personal, personal. If you mix the two things will get messy. What I wan the world to know about me is that I am a very loving, caring and professional person that will always give you the respect you deserve. I have also recently been nominated for Best Baker in ATL’s Hottset, and Best Small Business of the Year 2020 by Pitch Black Fashion Inc.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to thank my friends and family for all the years of continued support during this journey. My wife Justine for allowing me to pursue my entrepreneurial vision. My kids for always believing in me and telling their friends about what I do. My mom for all the love only a mother can give. To Le Cordon Bleu and one Chef that had her way of making sure I got certain skills under my belt to want to go to the next level and that is Chef Lisa Fernandez. And lastly my Cake family that keeps me busy with their orders to continue to help me grow.
