We had the good fortune of connecting with Zorriana Smith and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Zorriana, what matters most to you?
This is a great question and I love it so much because it is our values that shape every decision we make in life. For me, it is integrity. In my business, it is important for me to create solid products using this principle as a foundation. I would never sell something that I, myself, would not use. I treat every handcrafted item as if I am making it for myself. My mom used to always say to me “whatever your trade is, be the best and be fair” and this is something that I always think of before marketing a new product. In being the best, I believe she meant that in a sense of me being the best that I can be and not in the sense of being the best there is.
What should our readers know about your business?
Faeries & Fireflies Shoppe specializes in fantasy themed candles for those who are still children at heart or those who simply love all things fantasy. When one burns a candle from Faeries & Fireflies Shoppe, it is meant to provide them with an immersive experience by opening their imagination and transporting them to the fantasy realm. Each scent is carefully curated so it not only smells great but is reminiscent of a scene or place in a fairy tale or other fantasy adventure. I believe that what sets me apart from others is my attention to detail along with the care that I put into each and every product I sell. Again, I would never sell a product that I would not buy. Also, I wholly believe that what is meant for me is for me only, so I do not worry about competitors and am always eager to help a fellow chandler. I am most proud of the fact that I am able to market a product that I love and stand by 200%.
Making candles actually began as a hobby for me during the pandemic. Being quarantined was really tough for me, so making candles was very therapeutic and thwarted depression. Shortly after, I started posting my products on social media and people began to inbox me wanting to purchase them. At the time, I did not feel like my products were ready to sale so, I gifted most of them. I then spent a year researching and testing until I finally had safe, solid products and that is when Faeries & Fireflies Shoppe was born. Getting to this point was far from easy, but nothing worth having ever is. There was no blood, but there was surely sweat and tears.
I faced many challenges but overcame them because of my amazing support system and my drive to be successful. I want to create generational wealth and I knew that it was not going to magically happen, but that I had to work for it. For me, it is truly about creating a legacy for my children and grandchildren. The lessons that I have learned along the way is to be open to constructive criticism, always think positive and be confident.
I am very passionate about doing my part and giving back. Currently, I am working on a special candle for breast cancer month that will be available October 1st. Part of the proceeds from this candle will be donated to a local charity for breast cancer.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
This is a very large city and I am still discovering it, so we would pretty much just go exploring. The one place that would for sure be on the itinerary is Dick’s Last Resort because the catfish is amazing! Also, BuzzBrews in Deep Ellum is great, it’s the poblano cream sauce for me.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would not be where I am today if it were not for my parents, they always believed in me no matter how many mistakes I made. They made me believe that anything is possible no matter how out of reach it seemed. My children Bercuse, Riley and Imari kept me from giving up when I wanted to throw in the towel so many times. They constantly reminded me by saying “ma you can do this, you got this” that I can do anything I want. It was my daughter in laws Taresa and Joi that have been my voices of reason throughout my journey. Last, but not least, my sister Tonya for supporting my ideas.
