We had the good fortune of connecting with Taylor Douglas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Taylor, the decisions we make often shape our story in profound ways. What was one of the most difficult decisions you’ve had to make?
I think the most difficult decision I’ve ever had to make was creating my business during a pandemic. I didn’t start this business with much investments or savings. It was literally through paycheck to paycheck with budgeting. I was honestly going to start my business after the pandemic, but why should I have to wait.  I just did it, with much support and God’s blessings.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
TayKay Wraps provide comfort, protection, and innovative styles for our black unique coils and curls; Embracing diverse designs that embody the African Diaspora and culture. Each wrap and durag is stitched with 100% satin or silk to protect your beautiful strands. Not only can you wear a TayKay Wrap as a headwrap but it can be used as a top, belt or placed as a decorative home accessory.

I am a very Type A person, so structure, time management is one of my strengths. There wasn’t much of a challenge to create my business, it actually makes me happy to plan and execute ideas. Being a creative helps as well because I can merge the two. The only struggle is money, but I made it happen by much donations and budgeting. I’ve had some obstacles but I continue to leave my business in God’s hands and continue to have people in my life to encourage me and give me wisdom and helpful advice. My best friend since middle school Aniya Picou has been my right hand through everything. Down to, listening to me vent, helping me create names for my wraps/durags, or just bringing the plates and napkins for lunch for our photoshoots. I continue to have people by my side that want to see me successful but we also enrich each other.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being a New York Native, I will definitely have to take her/him to Brooklyn, because to me Brooklyn is the real representation of New York. I am a bit bias since I am from Brooklyn, but we will have to pop out to Barclays, Times Square, SoHo of course.

Before the pandemic I hosted parties with a team of friends called Goodvibes WorldWide, we had the best parties at Bar Schimmi in Williamsburg, we will have to swing by of course.
Thrifting is a love of mine, taking her/him to the best thrifting stores in NY such as L Train Vintage, Buffalo Exchange, Goodwill etc. There are always amazing places to eat, but we can go to Sweet Chicks, Bricolage, Bunny’s High Line.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have 2 groups of people that I need to shoutout. Shoutout to my coworkers at my current job for putting the bug in my ear. Especially Curize Richards-Godet and Kevion Turnball; they both pushed me to create my business and continue to show me support. They were there with me from creating my name and helping me buy my domain. Secondly, I most certainly need to shout out my big sisters at Vibe BK, Jasmine Williams, and Latoya Skerrette. They helped push me to actually start creating, and moving it forward. I’ve known them both since I was little, and they helped raise me to the young woman that I am today. I call them my BM’S (Baby Mentors) the pun to Baby Mothers, because they were there with me from the start.
