We had the good fortune of connecting with Slick Guruzee and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Slick, why did you pursue a creative career?
Music was always a huge factor in my life. There was something about listening to music that had the ability to capture my emotions in a way that allowed me to really process and understand different things through my life. Before I ever decided to write a rap, at maybe about 5- 6 years old, I was the lead singer of my nana’s church group called the Sunshine band. As I got a little older, I was able to use this experience to benefit my artistic career. Aside from that, my dad played a huge role in me pursing an artistic career. Growing up, my dad was a music promoter in many different cities. At first, one of my biggest goals was to use music as a way to spend more time with my dad considering he spent a huge portion of his time/energy working on music, but as time went on I was able to see a lot of what goes on behind the scenes of the music industry and eventually develop a love for being an artist.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My brand is Guruzee which essentially means Guru (Master of all things/teacher).

Creating music for me has become a way for me to connect with many people who simply share similar experiences and characteristics as me. Being able to be an influential voice for people ultimately is one of the greatest abilities & responsibilities that I believe I have. Being able to change someone’s life in a positive way simply by speaking is powerful! It’ll never be easy having such a huge influence, but what I’ve learned along the way is that being a motivation for the people around is necessary because you never truly understand what someone else is going through, but you may have the ability to change the dynamic of their life for the better with a simple gesture such as making music that they can relate to.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
We’re going straight to the studio!! Lol, but all jokes aside I’m the type of person who really like to personalize things based off of who I’m dealing with. I’m extremely spontaneous and literally love to live in the moment while having fun so my itinerary would most likely consist of something very wild (fun), but I’d make sure that our event matches both personalities. Also I’m very nostalgic so many of our activities would include historical landmarks, but the history has to be something that we both frequently reminisce about. It’s hard for me to generally explain what I’d do with a person visiting simply because I’d make sure to study some of their favorite things in order to literally give them the best time of their life.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There’s so many people who I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to, but for time sake, I’d like to give a shout out to my dad. Without him, I’d probably never have discovered my love and passion for music. I’m not the one to use cliche’s really, but music honestly saved and changed my life for the better and have created endless opportunities.
