We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicholas Stewart and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nicholas, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
It has definitely flipped upside down since the birth of my son Charles. Classes and studio time are all structured around sleep and pre-school. Most of my creativity happens in the night or the wee hours of dawn. The balance is definitely needed. I need my family to keep my heart going, and my painting to keep my sanity.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
For a long time, I have worked with the rhythms, colors, and forms found in places of soul searching. Objects like stained glass windows, altars, and shrines have been the visual inspiration. My Charlie series is no exception. Halos, cherub wings, figures and distinct lines separate fields and facets of color. Color that glows. When my son charlie was born, he undoubtedly unlocked this unknown love within me. He also put my own mortality into context. He brought unlimited love, and self evaluation. My most recent series of work has been an exploration of the “figurative” horizon (pun intended). My son (sun- center of our system) is always inspiring me with his strength and curiosity. He has emerged as this Prometheus like figure in my life and my work. Prometheus Charlie is delivering me knowledge and wisdom, but also a recognition of my own mortality.

Any great local spots you’d like to shoutout?
Typically I’d enjoy grilling something at the house. Good food, good people, and lots of wine. Unfortunately, kids aren’t always great at breweries or restaurants, so any and all outdoor locations are prime.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My wife Kate and son Charles are my everything. They are the muse and stronghold for my creativity. Without them, I’d have no window into my art. Of course, my mentor and beloved friend Andy Braitman. He has been my Obi Wan. There is no possible way I could ever thank him for his guidance and opportunities.
