We had the good fortune of connecting with Melissa Corley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Melissa, why did you pursue a creative career?
I was blessed to grow up in a family of hairstylists and salon owners so as a child I was always in the salon. Over the years my mother taught me many things. How to conduct myself professionally, the importance of arriving to work early to prepare for the day, how to assist other professionals and best of all, how good it feels to make someone feel beautiful. I have always known that I wanted to be a hairstylist. It is rewarding in so many ways. I have worked in this industry for 23 years and one of the things I love the most is that it is an ever-changing journey. There are always new techniques and technologies to learn so staying on top of my own education is crucial so that I can provide my clients the most current cuts, colors and styles.

I am incredibly passionate about my career. If you have or need the vision, I can create it for you!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
One of of the things I enjoy doing the most is color corrections, I love the challenge and I get great pleasure from being able to give my client their confidence back when they look in the mirror at the end results. I also love teaching other stylist the things I have learned over the years to help them get the best results in their color corrections. It’s so rewarding for me to watch other stylists learn and thrive! As our industry has changed and evolved over the years, so has the acceptance of fun colors in our hair. With today’s trends, it is common to see people of all ages rocking fantasy colors. This is where I get really excited! I already loved doing hair but this took it to a whole other level for me. I have been doing fantasy colors now for the last 8 years. It comes with it’s own set of challenges but again, that’s what I love. I absorb as much knowledge as I possibly can from anyone that is willing to share. Being able to create something magical in someone’s hair is without a doubt my favorite thing to do in the salon. I get to paint rainbows!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
As hairstylists, we are constantly learning from each other’s experiences. Weather you’ve been in the industry for years or are fairly new, there is always something we can learn from each other. Keeping yourself open to trying new things is the best thing you can do for career as there are many different ways to get to the same end result. I have taken classes from big names like Sonya Dove and Michael Haas but the person I feel like I have learned the most from is Mags Kavanaugh. Mags is a trichologist, make-up artist, cosmetologist and chemist who has been in the industry for over 40 years. She knew our industry needed a place where we could ask questions and get correct “by the book” answers so she created www.AskMags.com. I love learning from her because not only do I get the answers to my questions, she gives us the science behind it as well. No matter what obstacles I am faced with, I know that she will have the answers that I can trust.
