We had the good fortune of connecting with Keyana James and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Keyana, why did you pursue a creative career?
When I think of artistic or creative the first thing that comes to mind is a free spirited person. That’s exactly what I am, I love to express myself through my art I feel like that’s the best way I can be understood. Honestly I feel like that’s why I was placed on this earth to share my creativity. When I was younger my mom and family always told me that I was always performing, always wanted to be the center of attention. My creativity allows me to have a voice and be seen. Communication is something that a lot of people including my self struggle with because of anxiety. So having a creative outlet has definitely helped me. I absolutely love the freedom that I have when it comes to creating. There’s so many different ways of being artistic and being creative so for me doing my makeup is the best way to express how I’m feeling or to show what’s going on inside of my head. Being able to entertain and motivate others through my art is what I wanted to do growing up so I’m extremely blessed that I get to do what I love each and every day.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a beauty content creator. I film makeup, hair, fashion videos and I also Vlog my life. I’m currently living abroad in Japan so my content these past few years have been based around my experience being a melanin girl out here. I’m actually really proud of my growth on social media my main platform is my YouTube channel. I’ve been able to grow a support system of 7k KREW members and that number is increasing daily. When you put your life out into the internet it is such a scary thing but I’m really happy and blessed that I’ve been able to attract positive like minded people who genuinely love me for me.
Being a content creator is not for the weak. You don’t clock out of this career path like a 9-5. Planning content can take hours, creating a look can take hours, then editing and uploading, doing research on trends, it’s never ending. Especially if you’re a 1 man show. People just see the end results of videos and pictures but but the work that goes into uploading a makeup tutorial or a travel vlog is a lot.
Everyday is definitely a challenge when you’re the boss but I genuinely love what I do. So I don’t really look at my day to day task as hard. I mentioned before I gained such a great support system so when it comes to creating content for me it’s fun it’s my happy place and I know that what I’m doing is impacting someones life and putting a smile on their face.
I’ve been creating content for a few years now and I learned that you have to be patient and consistent to actually grow in the social media world. Everyday I’m learning something new. I’m learning new makeup techniques, how to edit better, my camera equipment etc. Social media is always changing so I have to keep up so I would say that those are my biggest challenges when it comes to being a content creator.
I want the world to know that I am a happy loving person who loves making other smile.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I feel like everybody I’ve cross paths with on my journey of life deserves credit. My family the love and support they gave me helped me find my passion. My KREW the supporters I’ve gained through social media. They tune into my content and show so much love. Which pushes me to continue doing what I do even on days where I feel like I wanna give up.
