We had the good fortune of connecting with Kayla Barnes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kayla, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
The thought process behind starting “The Kasual Kollection” was creating a high end brand that offers various home decor items. As we became older we developed a love for candles and always knew we wanted to started our own home decor line. We began our home decor line by introducing 100% scented soy candles. Our candles are guaranteed to set the mood and bring a sense of warmth to your home, office, or personal space. We decided to create a soy product because we wanted to be more self conscious of the benefits of all natural candles. Burning soy candles are non- toxic, allow clean & slow burning, and create a stronger aroma. We wish to continue expanding our brand with various all natural products and home decor items.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As two sisters from Maryland, we grew up with our parents preaching the importance of education and having a great career. With both of us receiving a college degree, we went on to start careers in Marketing and Administration. Though it may not have been the easiest journey we managed to push through and create professional careers for ourselves. Along the way we realized our true passion was entrepreneurship. We had to figure out the perfect balance of having a professional career and pursuing your entrepreneur dream, which can be very hard sometimes. The best advice we would give anyone in the same situation is to truly follow your dream, stay consistent, and never give up on what your passionate about.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The DMV, better known as D.C., Maryland, and Virginia is the place to live! We currently live in Maryland which is seconds away from Washington D.C. The nation’s capital has so much culture and history to offer individuals who have never visited. From museums, festivals, tours, restaurants, and much more. If you ever visited my hometown I would take you to a crab shack (home of the blue crab). Also, the National Harbor to enjoy great views, delicious food, and ride the Capital Wheel. It wouldn’t be a good time if you didn’t go brunching in the city!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
We would like to shoutout our good friend, Kim Alejo who played a big role in us starting a candle company. We always joked around about starting a company as sisters and she pushed us to really chase our dreams. We enjoy having a good friend like her to motivate and push us to our fullest potential. Not only has she been very supportive, but she has helped tremendously in different aspects of our company!
