We had the good fortune of connecting with JLeel and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi JLeel, we’d love to start by asking you about lessons learned. Is there a lesson you can share with us?
The most important lesson my career has taught me is, keep God first have faith and believe in yourself. Know that you can do anything when you have those three things in your life.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been singing since I was young,But started taking it seriously at the age of 14. In high school I was traveling, doing shows, and just feeling like I was on top of the world. I had no humble bone in my body. At the age of 15, I had a record deal offering from Sony for $2.5 Million and I thought I was going to be a superstar the next day. However, the record deal never happened. That same year the shows, traveling and everything else stopped. My mother lost her business during that time, which affected our household as well. Since then God has taking me and my family through different obstacles from homelessness, having no food, and wearing the same clothes everyday day. God really humbled me because he showed me that he is in charge, and he can take away our blessings if we are not greatful. From 2010 until now I’ve been developing my craft from being on “The Famous Apollo Theater”, to working with Grammy Nominated Producers and much more. This helped me develop my old school/new school smooth melodic sound. Creating songs like “READY” , “LET’S BE REAL”, and “FINALLY”. I want to show people that you can fall down and come back even stronger and wiser. I’m most proud of how I never gave up on myself and I knew that I would be able to find my way with God’s help.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would take them to Shockoe Bottom which is downtown. It’s multiple bars, restaurants, and local open mic events during the week. Many vending shows, museums and the Canal walk where you can see the lake.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to give a shoutout to the FaMMily Moore Muzik, To Tejai Moore for believing in me and always staying connected with me, and also I have to give a special shoutout to my Wife for helping me and sticking by my side through it all she is my why!
