We had the good fortune of connecting with Jelia ( JC Live) Coleman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jelia ( JC Live), what do you attribute your success to?
I always put God first in everything I do and being consistent. My faith has anchored me through various storms and victories I have had throughout my years of being in radio. I feel like the consistency and my faith all wrapped into one have made me successful during this lifetime.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
After graduating from Fayetteville State University with a degree in Mass Communications is when I started radio. You have to do internships to obtain the degree, so I did one at a local urban radio station WZFX (Foxy 99.1). After my internship ended, a radio personality left for another market, and I was able to get hired for their spot. That’s how my career and radio started. Also, being in radio opened up various doors because I was able to start writing news stories for a local city newspaper. So I could do two things I love at the same time as a career; it was very challenging at first because doing both demanding jobs caused me to learn how to balance out my life. The main lesson I have learned through this journey is it ok to work and do what you love but to make sure that you take time for yourself, relax and take time off. I thought always working and hustling was essential, but I learned that ensuring you get to rest and being good mentally is more important. I am a single mother of 3, and it’s been very hard facing different obstacles, but no matter what, I kept the faith and kept going. Now I work for two radios station Magic 106.9 in Fayetteville, NC and 92.1 Choice Fm in Raleigh, NC.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
There is much to do in Raleigh, NC, but the itinerary would be eating at places such as First Watch, The Melting Pot, and Tupelo Honey. Also, visit the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences, Chapel Hill winery, and Fayetteville street, a strip for shopping and visiting various bars with good drinks.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to recognize the listeners who continue to support me through this radio journey. It’s a great feeling for people to follow you and listen to your show even when you which markets, so I have to thank them.
