We had the good fortune of connecting with Jamal Hawkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jamal, what role has risk played in your life or career?
I believe that with risk there is reward, I have come to a new found understanding that many things in life are never easy until you have confidence to take a chance. My career has succeeded based upon the risks that I have began to take ,in effort of gaining respect and popularity in my community. As things get easier in my life Ive learned that the risk taken will only become more challenging to reach a level at the top of the totem pole.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I would like the world to know that to become a fashion icon ,it’s not always about how much money your clothing cost . In many cases I have received the most compliments from reworn clothing . Years before having the proper finances to feel good about the clothes on my back , I learned about consignment stores and thrift stores . Little did I know I would find a passion in shopping for less ,but also being the best dressed. This became an addition to shopping for me ,as well as for finding clothes for others .Finding a love for the things many people throw away felt obscure at first ,but gave me a felling of hope that I could bring something different to the fashion world.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Believe it or not , Its nothing better than a deliciously grilled burger with a little loved spread all over. One location for a lunch of a life time is known as Ben Hill Grill which is located in the South-West side of Atlanta . From a Shrimp Burger to a nice ,sweet toothed Blue Velvet Cake , you can’t go wrong. For the proper drink afterward with a few friends you can’t go wrong with Dantanna’s on Ponce De Leon is perfect for a late night drink to set the mood from a sunset after a long day.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I truly would like to give a shoutout to Natori . Natori has played a huge role in my life ,because for the past 4 years she has helped push me past a fashion barrier previously unknown. I have found a way to tap into the masculine feminine energy side of clothing . With that being said I have gained the confidence to wear different styles that have helped me realize that clothing can be unisex in many cases . Coming into the realization that clothing does not have a gender , has helped our brand succeed which is known as Mellow Wasteland LLC. From selling at local pop-up shops in Atlanta to now working on an Online Platform .
