We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Avis Foley and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. Avis, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
I have always believed that if there is something that you really want to manifest for your life -like you know that this thing is tied to your gifts and your purpose- you should always go for it. In doing this expect both good and bad along the way. This is nothing more than the process testing your character, strength, and dedication to what you say you want. So, no matter how difficult….No matter how much disappointment you may face….. You should never give up. And, besides, you don’t have the luxury of not trying! Someone in this world is waiting on you. I also believe that sometimes giving up can be the best thing one can do. Sometimes giving up helps you minimize losses and optimize time. The appropriate time to give up is when what you are striving for no longer makes you happy or brings you peace. Most importantly, it’s no longer what you actually want. If your happiness doesn’t naturally flow, let it go.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Right now, I believe that my purpose has allowed me to journey down several different career paths (which all are preparing me for something MUCH GREATER). I am an educator, author, and transformational speaker. What sets me apart is that I possess the ability to help women go from invisible to INVINCIBLE! -all while showing them how to invest in themselves. Even though I faced much adversity growing up, once I was able to fully embrace my past and use it to fuel my future, my mindset and follow-through became relentless! I knew then that NOTHING would ever get in the way of me accomplishing my goals. It’s never going to be easy, but it will always be worth it. I overcame my challenges by viewing them as opportunities that allowed me to expound on my skill set and improve my leadership skills. There are numerous lessons that I have learned along the way but three of the most important lessons I’ve learned have been the following: 1. True growth requires you to be uncomfortable at any given time, 2. Perfection is impossible and your uniqueness is the most valuable gift you possess and 3. Dreams don’t have deadlines. I want the world to know that my brand begins and ends with love and excellence. I aspire to help others always be the very best version of themselves. My brand brings out the BEST in me because I know that my purpose has nothing to do with me, but everything to do with someone else. Knowing that fact is why I do what I do. My brand consistently strives to employ service that seeks to create value and impact lives.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
To be honest, since I’ve become an entrepreneur, I have been more focused on saving money and/or investing it back into my business, so I really don’t have time for or knowledge of the best spots in the city. (Yes, I’ pretty lame at this point but that will all soon change (lol). During a perfect visit we would definitely try various types of restaurants, go to a play or art show, try a sip n’ paint, have a spa day, visit the bookstores/museums/galleries, go shopping, etc. One day soon I will be able to travel all around the world speaking and saving lives. As for right now, I must continue to grind.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I most HUMBLY dedicate my shoutout to the most High (Real. Talk.)! I know that it is because of Him that I have made it thus far and I can say that I am blessed. Without him, I am nothing. I can never do enough for Him. Period. Other influential people that inspire me to be greater than great includes my tribe (you know who you are). They are my sounding board and we are always on the same frequency. It’s so important that you have an awareness of how the people around you influence your life. Thanks for always wrapping your arms around me with love and care. The last person that inspires me to be the phenomenal woman that I am is my twin sister, Avon. She believes in me and is my greatest fan. Words cannot really express the love and gratitude that surrounds my heart for her. She is the DOPEST.
