We had the good fortune of connecting with Zakiyah Simms and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Zakiyah, what’s the end goal, career-wise?
My end goal for my career is to be a celebrity nail technician and a traveling nail technician.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I’ve been a nail technician for about two years now. The journey that I’ve been on definitely hasn’t been an easy one, but it has been worth it. Whenever I faced a challenge, I had to remind myself of the goals that I want to reach in my career. If I quit, I will never get the chance to see my dreams turn into a reality. One of the lessons that I’ve learned along the way is that closed mouths don’t get fed! In this industry, if you want something, you have to go for it. Nothing is going to fall in your lap or be given to you. I want the world to know that I didn’t get here overnight. It has taken a lot of hard work and dedication to accomplish the things that I have accomplished so far. Never give up on what you love to do!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
There are so many places that I love going to! If I was going somewhere for food, I’d go to either Nouveau or Slutty Vegan. I love the vibes of both restaurants. After going to get food, going downtown to Centennial Park would be the next stop. I loved going there when I was younger during the summer because they’d always have the waterpark open.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The first person that I would have to shout out is my dad. He was the first person to support my decision in doing nails. He bought me my first nail table and funded the first set of nail supplies that I got. Another person that I want to shout out is Natali Carmona (getnailed32 on Instagram). Her nail videos were the first ones that I came across and they have helped me sooo much in my journey of learning how to do nails!
