We had the good fortune of connecting with Tyrone Jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tyrone, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My thought process behind starting my own business was that I’ve seen a ton of talented people in the music industry have the goods as far as talent and ability but most fell short because they had no idea about anything pertaining to the actual music business. I knew there was a way, I just had to discover it. For me, starting a “legit” business was my first step.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Well….I am a professional guitarist and CEO of Strummindaaxe Music INC. I’ve been playing professionally since 2001. I’ve worked with some of the world’s top artists. Some of the highlights I’ve experienced along the way was playing and or recording with artists such as Andrae Crouch, After 7, Fred Hammond, Yolanda Adams, Kirk Franklin, Kurt Carr, Donnie McClurkin, Chante Moore, to name a few and my main boss lady since 2007, CeCe Winans who has a fairly new project out now that I was able to be a part of entitled: “Believe For It”. I’m truly truly blessed!
Starting out I was a late bloomer so I had to put A LOT of work in in a short period of time. Times got hard along the way but I kept pushing. Several times I was in rooms with people that I didn’t deserve to be in as far as skill goes, but that pushed me and motivated me to get better and to get better RIGHT then. I had to develop a work ethic second to known just to play catch up. The blessing is, I CAUGHT UP.
I’ve played A LOT of records. A lot of number 1 songs records that reached the highest status and that have won so many awards. I give credit and Glory to God for His grace. I had faith but I had to work because Faith Without Works is DEAD.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well, first let’s talk about eating! Lol. Two of my favorite places in the Atlanta area to eat at is Nut Cafe and Slutty Vegan. We’re gonna hit those spots a couple times!
I honestly love to read and study my African History! With that being said, I would make sure we visit all things Martin Luther King Jr (birthplace/national park), Alonzo Herndon’s Home (Atlanta’s first black millionaire) and The Oakland Cemetery. Any historical black place in the area will do!
We would visit the black owned bookstores like Nubian Books, For Keeps Bookstore and the Medu Bookstore to name a few. Hit a couple vinyl record shops and maybe get down to St. James Live to hear a little smooth jazz.
I’m not a complicated guy. May just end up at the house cooking on the grill and spinning some records.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to give a brief shout out to a few people. First, my wife Shara for supporting me in every way possible! My deceased mother and father Marvin and Johnnie Mae Jackson for instilling music in me from the womb. My God mother and father Dennis (deceased) and Ravonda Jacobs for helping shape me spiritually as well as pushing me when I couldn’t see past the wall in the room that I was standing in. Lastly, my brother from another mother, Rick Watford for teaching me how to be a REAL SESSION guitarist and that helped open up all the incredible doors that I’ve been able to walk in thus far.
