We had the good fortune of connecting with Kendrick Gatewood, PT, DPT and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kendrick, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Recover Physical Therapy was birthed out of a state of being tired and fed up with a system approach to healthcare and not an individualized approach to healthcare. I knew, in order to make a change, you have to be in a position to make a change. Change comes when a person gets sick and tired of being sick and tired. Also, I have a close friend that told me years ago,”Ken…if you are going to invest, invest in yourself.”  After spending years serving in a system that appears to not be considering any changes to its approach to healthcare delivery regarding the patients that it serves, I became sick and tired of being sick and tired of the system. I decided to be part of the change by stepping out on faith, investing in myself by becoming an independent practitioner, and taking my God given talents to start an individualized approach, healthcare business known as Recover Physical Therapy.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Recover Physical Therapy is…Where Outpatient meets House Calls. Where Affordability meets Accessibility. Where Physical Therapy and Wellness Services meet Anyone with a need. Recover Physical Therapy serves Atlanta and the neighboring cities by providing an individualized, physical therapy plan of care to clients that are in need of improving their mobility and/or decreasing their pain. We make our services convenient through home health visits or telehealth services. What sets us apart is our willingness to assist individuals conveniently (by going the the clients desired location for treatment), assisting individuals that has no insurance or underinsured (reasonable treatment pricing for all individuals especially those that have high copays or deductibles), and individuals that have fallen through the cracks (insurance will not pay for services anymore but clients still need physical therapy services or patient is a difficult case or a case that may require more treatment time). I am excited about the opportunity to serve each individual through the ministry of physical therapy while not being limited by a corporation’s allotted time. I am able to form and nurture a comfortable atmosphere because the number of clients to be seen in a given day is not a factor. I must credit each physical therapy corporation that I worked for in the past. The reason that I am giving credit is because I was able to take knowledge (good or bad) and gain understanding of what I desire to see or not see in regards to Recover Physical Therapy. The most important lesson that I learned along the way is to be respectful to each client, be truthful, and provide an enjoyable service as much as possible because my client’s time with me may be the only outlet of that person’s day, week, or month. I want the world to know that Recover Physical Therapy is here to give you our very best, and your goal is our goal. We believe that positive thinking equals positive outcomes.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my friend was visiting the city, we would first hike up Stone Mountain early in the morning just to start the day with exercise. Afterwards, we would go to breakfast at the Pancake House in Grayson, GA. to get some of their grits and other items, but definitely the grits. Chill for an hour or two before getting ready to see the sights (house of worship, shopping malls across the city, Martin Luther King, Jr. National Historic Park, and different areas to potentially live in because I am trying to convince them to move here). Now, it is time to eat lunch at Busy Bee Cafe and chill some more. Finish the day off either, going out with the wives for dinner or staying in and ordering dinner and spending quality time with our wives.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am a servant of the Most High. My God, The Father and The Creator of Us All, My Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and The Holy Spirit has guided my mind, heart, and body on this journey I call life. During this journey , my mother, father and sister have been with me and supported me. My wife, ShaQuita Gatewood, is my greatest cheerleader and my rock. She not only supports but challenges me to do and be better while also keeping me grounded. The surface under my feet would definitely not be firm, but be more like rushing waves if she was not by my side. My children are two reasons for me to continue to press forward daily. They are my present day and my future. Last but not least, My boys, called “The Boys” by our families and close friends from Memphis, TN., do a great job of keeping me grounded. They do a great job of challenging which causes me to grow and explore new adventures that I would not imagine for myself. Those mentioned are deserving of recognition that has contributed mostly to the success I have achieved. Through their efforts, support, mentorship, love, and encouragement, Recover Physical Therapy would not be in existence.
