We had the good fortune of connecting with Trevor Mugambi and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Trevor, why did you pursue a creative career?
I chose to pursue a career in the creative field because I had always had a passion for art and design. I believe that good design combained with creative thinking leads to impressive work.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art style is based on representation. Growing up I always had a love for art, but I noticed there was not a lot of African representation in the paintings, books, and TV shows around me at the time. I wanted to change that narrative. My goal as an artist is to make art that portrays Africans and people of color with respect and pride, with design I can further push a narrative or theme. Through practice and experimentation with different art styles and mediums, I continue to grow and improve as a creative in my field.
I’ve learned through my journey that it requires patience, practice, and curiosity to achieve my goals in my field.
I would want the world to know I am a proud Kenyan designer, creating work that not only pushes narrative but also reflects my culture and background.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
