We had the good fortune of connecting with Kocaine Kay and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kocaine Kay, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
Since I was 10 or 11 writing in my school pads, I knew had a gift with putting word together.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
When u a independent artist it’s better but more harder… Better because you are on your own with your creativity, and you move at your own pace. Whatever money u earn yours. Harder because you don’t get that major label type push behind you, so you have to find your own shows and create your on fan base. I learned it’s all about networking if you not out there trying to find a big move for yourself it pointless, cause know one ain’t gone notice you until you do something big so that’s why I’m always working and doing what I can to make sure I leave no stones left unturned. Even though I was writing raps in my pad since 10 or 11 I didn’t get good at it til 16 that’s when I was handing my music to people who would sing and rap along to it. My fans grew bigger since then but still not big enough I not stopping to the world hear me.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Special shout-out to two of my homeboys Blimp & Rap Reaper they are part of the reason I take it serious. I’m from a small town in Elizabeth City, Nc called Newland and the population is real small, but these two guys (Blimp & Rap Reaper) had a home studio and use to put out music in our neighborhood which inspired me and my partners to follow up since some of us rap but never recorded in a studio. I found a way to do the same and built a home studio and been dropping every since. Also I would like to shout out DSR (DaSoundRoom) a group of my brothers going hard making independent music and staying humble till we next up.
