We had the good fortune of connecting with Tavelyn James and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tavelyn, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
The most important factor behind my success is that I have built a good reputation with my peers. I am authentic in what I do and also very transparent. I do not lead from the corner office or the top seat in a boardroom, instead I guide people through a life of struggles that have ended with great triumph. I am a strong, intelligent, compassionate individual that did not allow failures to determine my success. All that I hav overcome has aided me in be able to be a mentor to my community and a leader for my city.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Becoming a published author was pretty long. I started writing my book in 2014 and finally in 2021 it was published. There were many late nights and sometimes stalls, but I got it finished. I’m proud and excited that others will be able to read my story and feel that nothing that we want out of life comes easy and that we have to work for what we want. Getting where I am today professionally came from sticking to the plan and not allowing obstacles to stop me. Things always try to hinder what you doing but discipline has to be the number one priority. Always continue the plan no matter what. Lessons I’ve learned along the way is to always bet on yourself because you will never lose. I want the world to know my story through life and basketball and to know that no matter what to continue to push through life and become the success story you want, as you are the aurthor of your own book.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting to eat & drink we would go to – Pasha, Harold’s Chicken and Ice Bar, Fin & Feathers these are like my go-to spots. Food, drinks and vibes are always on point. If we are hanging out we are either at Rose Bar or Suite Lounge.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would definitely like to give a shout out to my sister Shana. She has always been the glue that held us all together and now she’s the ROOTS. She unconditionally loves people. I love her beyond words could express. I would also like to shoutout my college professor Mr. William Lavery and his wife Barb as they are corporate sponsors for my Non-Profit organization. Mr. Lavery also wrote the Foreword in “Is This Basketball.” My friends and family have given me words of advice and encouragement. To the upmost highest of us all our Lord and Savior, I give all credit to him for allowing this to be my path.
