We had the good fortune of connecting with Tariq McIntyre and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tariq, why did you pursue a creative career?
The reason why I chose a creative career is pretty simple. I LOVE TO CREATE! I have a big imagination, Im always thinking of how I can be different, how can I stand out. When it comes to photography I wanted to tell story with my pictures by showing emotion, facial expressions, excitement and things of that nature. Not only did a take pictures but I also have a clothing brand. I just always had a drive for designing and creating.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I didn’t start off shooting basketball…
When I started my photography I did a lot of lifestyle photos and events like birthday parties, baby showers things like that! One day I decided to go to dyckman for a LA vs NY basketball event they had at the end of the summer. Mind you this was my first time ever going to dyckman! the atmosphere was INSANE! Me coming from a basketball background playing in High school and College I immediately feel in love. So many celebrities came out that day too! Baron Davis, Jadakiss, Styles P, Russ, C brickly and the list goes on. From the crowd, to the players, even the announcer that day I realized that I wanted to shoot basketball for my photography brand.
Now Im in year 2 with this photography thing and MAN! I never expected it to just take off the way it has been. The journey has not been easy at all, So much traveling, so many hours spent on the CPU editing lates nights early mornings. People just think photography is easy because you’re just snapping pictures and TRUST me, it isn’t anything close to easy. You do so much work behind the scenes and that’s what the people don’t see.
I want the world to know that I had to really GRIND to get where I am today and I STILL have to grind to get where I want to be, It never stops!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
First thing I would do is take them to get some really good food. Im from Brooklyn NY, and we have so much different styles of food here its really hard to choose from. I would probably take them to get some Caribbean food from footprints, peppers, or Suedes and maybe a nice brunch spot like Soho park brunch, Sweet chicks, or Peaches.
Some other places cool to go to would maybe a basketball game at one our famous parks like Dyckman, Gersh Park, or Rucker.
Definitely would have to take them to Times Square, that’s were all the people who aren’t from the city love to visit. Get a nice view of the tall buildings, go shopping, take the train somewhere I think that’s what it’s all about when visit NYC.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Two people I would name is Brandon Williams and Jessica Jean. about 2-3 years ago I went on a boys trip to California with some of my college friends and Brandon had brung a Nikon camera. At the time I couldn’t afford a camera but he always told me that I was great at creating, So long story short he let me take pictures with his camera the whole trip and everyone loved the photos I took! He gave me the confidence that I can really be good at this and should start taking it seriously. After that trip, I looked to Jessica who was doing photography as well for parties and events. Once I told her I wanted to get into and start my own brand she BLESSED me and gave me a extra camera that she had and let me use it until I was able to get my own, that camera was a Canon R5 I believe. Once I had that camera in my hands it was over! I started studying photography, going out taking pics of friends and family, that camera didn’t leave my side.
