We had the good fortune of connecting with Tanya McSween and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Tanya, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Hands down not giving up. My husband Harry and I started our photography business in 2010, right when the boom of wedding photography was getting big…great timing right? Well in 2011 our first child was born, then we had two more children, one in 2013, and one in 2015. There were so many times when I was ready to throw in the towel and be done with the photography business altogether. But the most important factor behind my success is that I never gave up. When I was up late nights editing, I never gave up. When the business slowed down because we had a newborn baby, I didn’t give up. When I was completely overwhelmed by motherhood and being a business owner, I didn’t throw in the towel. Even though I wanted to at times. When I failed at something I tried again until I succeeded. Our kids are 9, 7, and 5 now and I feel as though I am finally getting my head above water and catching my breath. It has most definitely been a slow burn for us, but without a doubt, I can say the success of our brand is because I never gave up on my dream.
What should our readers know about your business?
At McSween Photography we always say, “people first.” We don’t just provide our clients with pretty pictures of their wedding day, but we provide an amazing experience. We come alongside our clients on their wedding day and take care of them like a trusted friend, with them every step of the way! We are proud of the way we have run our business for over 11 years always putting our clients first and turning out some pretty amazing moments captured. We got to where we are today in our business with a lot of patience. It was not easy! Being a small business owner you wear all the hats and take all the burden, but in the end, we have created something wonderful! Most of all I think I have learned to be patient and those overnight successes are rare, most success comes with a lot of hard work. I want the world to know that we are a fine art wedding photography brand that values client care above all.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We would most definitely go down to Krog Street Market for a little food or pop into The Varsity downtown. Take in a braves baseball game, go shopping in Little five points, take a bike ride on the beltline, walk through Piedmont Park, cafe intermezzo for dessert.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to dedicate this shoutout to Harry, my husband. He has stood by my side every step of the way. He has been in it with me when I have cried over how much work I have to do. As well as being my second shooter and all things technical guru. I could not do business or life without him.
