We had the good fortune of connecting with Tanita (Tee) Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Tanita (Tee), what role has risk played in your life or career?
The way I think about risk is differently than most. My whole life has been about risk taking, cause without it I would not be who I am or where I am in life. I approach taking risk as if it was my last day on this earth. Taking a risk is a no brainer for me, because I grew up with all odds against me. And because I grew u feeling like odds were against me, I always asked myself “what do I have to lose?”. Asking myself that question struck a match in me that eventually led to my personal life/career choices. My risk taking led me to Atlanta, it led me to the group of friends I have. It led me to make the decision of switching my major from Fashion Marketing to Psychology. Risk taking led me to a school where I would soon grow to find myself– Clark Atlanta University. Clark Atlanta University (the best University) motto is “I’ll Find a Way, or Make One”, This motto I was living by eventually pushed me to go after everything I wanted to achieve in life. And because of that motto and risk taking I am now further into my life’s purpose.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Mental Speaks mission is to enlighten the mind, body, and soul through practicing mindfulness, self-care, gratitude, mental and physical health. My career is the most exciting thing to me because I know it is much bigger than me. What sets me apart from most people is my pure genuine spirit and my willingness to pour into others, even strangers. I truly believe this world could be a better place if there were more people like me. I developed Mental Speaks out of pure love and advocacy to make humans better. I am so proud of the development of Mental Speaks because It all started with an small idea, and to see it coming into full circle is a blessing. I am excited to see how everyone responds to all the goods and services that Mental Speaks will provide for the people and community. Getting to where I am was not easy because I took 10 months off to await the arrival of my daughter. And after having her I realized it was much harder to fully dive into my business alone, so I became business partners with my sister. Mental Speaks will officially launch summer 2021, and although Mental Speaks has not brought any real challenges just yet, I am grateful to overcome any future lessons or challenges, Lastly, Mental Speaks will be a service for those who need Mental and physical health guidance. Mental Speaks will be bigger than me, and for anyone that reads this know that your situation does not define who you are or where you’re going.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my bestfriend was coming into town my itinerary would be very different than most haha. My favorite places to go in Atlanta are definitely the hiking trails, and the art galleries. I am a woman of adventure so anything regarding being outdoors I love it. My go to places are, Sweetwater Creek State Park, Arabia Mountain trail, Lullwater Park Trail, Six flags Over Georgia, tubing, Buckhead bars and Piedmont Park.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have more than a few people that I would like to thank or shout out. First and foremost I would like to Thank God and the universe for always guiding me through all my crazy decisions. My mom Beatrice Banister I want to thank you for raising me and 7 siblings all by yourself. Because of you I walk with strength, dignity and resilience. My older sister Meisha, thank you for pushing me to move to Atlanta. Because of your pushing I am living my life. To my friends John, Kendall thank you both so much for being the best friends I never knew I needed. Thank you both for pouring into me in my time of need. Thank you both for our struggling moments, our talks, our laughs, our cries, and being the best concert crew there is. Lastly, I thank my baby girl Sevyn Ali, because of you I know a different love, and a new way of life.
