We had the good fortune of connecting with Steven Lafferty and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Steven, how has your work-life balance changed over time?
The most pronounced change has been the life I have gained through self-employment. My life is no longer scheduled around my work. Rather, my work is arranged around my life. I have been able to coach my daughter’s soccer teams over the last several years. I have been able to take care of personal matters. This has allowed me to attend out of state family events all on my time without disruption to work. In fact, it is a healthier lifestyle that allows me to focus in a productive and efficient way when I do work. This has translated into very satisfied customers who value a job well done.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I love our name and chose Rakers because it describes those who collected trash years ago. Rakers embodies hard work, dependability, quality, and resourcefulness. Customers inherently treat us as a friend, making answering the calls very pleasant and we have become good friends with many of our customers. I have always been a decisive leader in business and act with confidence. When faced with difficult odds I find things tend to fall in place when I push forward through the doubt and stay the course. The outcomes may not always be what I intended but they are never a failure. The greatest challenge is funding and as a small business there are few good options beyond self-funding. I found it a test of fortitude and commitment to finance Rakers via my retirement accounts. Rakers is full of great stories and has alleviated the burden of usable unwanted household items in a responsible manner making “Landfills the Last Resort”.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Metro Atlanta is full of great places to visit and enjoy. I am partial to starting the day with a biscuit at the BaseCamp restaurant then head down the street to hike Kennesaw mountain. Evenings are always fun in downtown Roswell or Woodstock where there are many establishments to grab a drink, dine and hangout with friends.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Rakers is a family affair with my spouse, Ann, contributing her time networking, assisting on jobs, and promoting us on social media. Ann has been a great sport and Rakers has benefited from her efforts to enrich the brand by presenting a great first impression!
