We had the good fortune of connecting with Skai Hye and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Skai, how do you think about risk?
Honestly, the whole music industry is a big risk taking test lol. You have to trust and believe in your music so much that you’re willing to put yourself through a continuous cycle of unguarded risks every day. It’s really madness lol, but it’s also very beautiful! With no guaranteed success, a big part of having a music career is simply for the outlet and enjoyment. I think anytime the enjoyment of something outweighs your personal fear of risk (for instance skydiving), you’re speaking to something bigger inside and that makes it worth it! Consider what’s the worst that could happen, what is failure to you? Failure to me is giving up before giving it my all. I just know at the end of my life I’d rather look back and think “I’m glad I did that” versus “I wish I’d done that”, and if it falls in the latter then (after weighing it out) I’m taking the risk!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I started doing music when I was 12 years old, so to still be here 13/14 years later continuing to do what I love is amazing! I think the main things that set me apart are my versatility, dedication, and longevity. The Oklahoma music scene is just a huge melting pot of undiscovered talent. We have so many different artists, styles, and sounds but I remember when I first started the industry wasn’t at this point. Looking back, it definitely wasn’t an easy task getting here lol! There were many lessons I learned and situations that I went through, but I think the biggest lesson I had to learn was to trust myself and stop worrying about other people’s opinions. In trusting myself I was able to create my own lane and brand in an industry where many people get lost trying to be who they feel pressured to be. That’s really what inspired my brand as an artist and my idea of being “Fly”. It’s all about rising above the negativity and allowing yourself to be unapologetically you! There’s nothing you can’t do as long as you’re dedicated and inspired. As an artist that’s really my biggest goal, to inspire others to chase their dreams too!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Best spots in Oklahoma City?! Okay. here we go: One of my favorite things to do is to go to a Thunder basketball game, they’re a lot of fun! We have some great restaurants but one you definitely have to hit is Eastside Pizza House (their black crust is AMAZING!) and take in some vibes. On the first Thursday’s of the month the only place to be is at Trip N Friends which is an event hosted by OKC artist Trip G! It’s a great vibe, lots of dope artists perform, and it’s definitely an event you don’t want to miss out on! The Bricktown/Downtown area is great for walking around with friends, I’d recommend stopping at Bourbon St. which is a cajun restaurant and their Alfredo is *chef’s kiss*! Outside of Oklahoma City, Tulsa always has something going on and is only about 1 1/2 hours away so it’s definitely worth the trip! You can go to the Gathering Spot and visit Black Wall Street there. Also when it’s rodeo season you HAVE to go to one, you won’t regret it! The great thing about Oklahoma is we have every ecosystem lol, so if you like to be outdoors there’s lots of active things to do as well! So many things to do honestly but these things are definitely things NOT to miss!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
So many people! First of course my family, friends, and my girlfriend! They are the ones who have supported me from day one. They’re behind the scenes at my shoots putting together sets and at my shows in the crowd, always down to help however! I’m definitely grateful for them! My manager Taylormade Jay who I’ve been working with for a few years now! He saw the potential in me, believed in my vision, and has helped me escalate to new heights! So grateful for him as well! My FANS!! They’ve been with me through so much, from where i started to where i am now there’s been so much growth and they support me through it all! I always shout them out because they’re a big part of all of this! Also platforms such as this that give up and coming artists like myself exposure and opportunity, it’s not easy when you’re trying to make something from nothing and I’m grateful for every helping hand I’ve met along the way, when I make it it will be a collaboration of all of our hard work!
