We had the good fortune of connecting with Shonda Boyd Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shonda, why did you pursue a creative career?
The reason why I chose an artistic/creative career was to enhance the beauty of women. I can recall as a little girl my fascination with styling the paper dolls and my barbie dolls the joy it gave me to see the transformation of dressing them and styling the barbie hair, That passion never faded only was enhanced and I’ve successfully been in the beauty industry for 30 years.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I am a licensed Cosmetologist, and Educator in the State of Georgia and North Carolina, a former platform artist that has graced the stage of numerous Bronner Brothers Hair Shows and have traveled many other states with Joyce Williams Products a black owned successful business out of Kansas City, Missouri.

I am a shorthair specialist that focus on healthy hair, relaxed, precision cuttting, and polished pixie hairstyles. I am a very meticulous hairstylist that prides myself and is known for making sure that the cut is sharp, that wrap is layed and every strand of hair is in place, you will not get out of my chair until I’m satisfied as the stylist that means no rush work for me!

I am most proud of my longevity in doing what I love and the fact that I’m still passionate about what I do, I always get excited running into young ladies that came to me years ago, who have families and careers now and when they see me, they will ask if I remember them I did their hair and to see the excitement on their face still after those years letting me know I did a great job. I very seldom toot my own horn so it’s an honor to hear it from others.

To know that I came in a career at the age of 19 not knowing how to successfully run a business as a 2nd generation business owner my grandmother being the first owning “ETHEL’S SANDWICH SHOP” and GAS STATION a successful business that sold home-cooked food. She was definitely an inspiration I was so young then so I didn’t learn alot, But, One thing I can remember she loved her customers and it kept them coming back. To know I survived 30 years as entrepreneur never working another job is a true testament of the gift of love knowing how to love and respect people, a talent that GOD truly blessed me with, and the skills that Leon’s Beauty School cultivated are truly what got me here. It was definitely not easy coming out of Beauty School building a clientele but I knew if I provided good customer service and a great product I would never go hungry. Although there were challenges I kept my faith in GOD and he came through every time.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to Shout out my daughter Zakiya Brown she is such a brilliant and beautiful young lady. She works really hard as a college student, entrepreneur, and a manager for a retail chain. She is definitely “MY WHY” She is the reason I go so hard and her encouragement is what pushes me out of my comfort zone when I feel as though I’m getting comfortable. I TRULY THANK GOD FOR HER!
