We had the good fortune of connecting with Sheena Hanley and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sheena, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process behind starting Shanley Custom Fash’uns was that I want my children and their children and their children’s children to have a family legacy. I want them to be able to look back and say “I come from something! I come from an entrepreneurial family!”

What should our readers know about your business?
Shanley Custom Fash’uns is a custom design clothing business whose moving forward into its own brand! My motto is “I can bring your creations to life!”

About 2 years ago I started this business and it wasn’t easy. During that time I had just lost my “actual money-making” job due to a work injury which lead to surgery. Which resulted in blood clots in my heart, lungs and calf. In the end I had to stay out of work for about 6 months to a year recovery so I definitely wouldn’t be able to work in my normal career field as an Inventory Control Specialist. I thought to myself “man, another obstacle stopping from starting a new venture.” I overcame this challenge after talking with my wife, my family, and my friends, lol my support system. I decided to just purchase whatever equipment I could with whatever funds that I had left from paying bills and I jumped into my business!

The biggest lesson that I learned along the way is that there may never be a perfect time to start a new business or a new chapter in life. Don’t wait for that moment, CREATE it!

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If I had to give an itinerary to someone about Atlanta, Ga it would be:

Day 1: Relax and settle in

Day 2: Visit Coca Cola World or a downtown event

Day 3: Visit a Brewery

Day 4: Visit the High Museum of Art

Day 5: Go to the Sundial restaurant

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would love to dedicate this Shoutout to my wife, my sisters, my parents and my friends! They have not only encouraged me to begin my entrepreneurial journey but they’ve been my mental, emotional and spiritual support system! These people are not just MY support, they are moms, dads, daughters, sons, sisters, brothers, partners, bosses and friends to so many others!

Also, shoutout the female bosses in my life! Jessica Hanley of Best Friend Daycare, Theresa Hanley of Hanley Environmental Services, Tessa Hanley of Assetworkx Enterprise, Shawnna Hanley of Sass Lash Pro, Tameka Hanley of Meek’s Kreations/Author, Ashley Geter of Xquisite/Xquisite Photography and Karen Williams of Kozy Dayz.

Thank you ladies for being the examples of excellence in female entrepreneurship!
