We had the good fortune of connecting with Shawna Beckmann and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Shawna, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
While I finished up my last semester of college, ready to graduate a year early and get to work, I noticed this strange bloating on one side of my stomach. Thinking it was something that could be resolved quickly with a nurse call over the phone, within a week I was having major surgery for a form of ovarian cancer. My doctors immediately removed my right ovary where a grapefruit sized tumor was growing and portion of my left, with a second tumor. After being wheeled out of surgery and upon waking up, the doctor said, “if you want to have children, you need to have them right away.” I did want to have children, my high school sweetheart and I wanted to have a big family. So at 21 and 3 months later we got married. And to our surprise, our babies came one after another, even with a fraction of a single ovary! We’d have 5 kids in 7 years and after the first few came, I knew Id never be in a “normal job” again. This started a series of failed attempts to work from home, starting with a “monthly sausage subscription” haha — eventually a good friend made an off handed comment to focus on what kept coming into my life and at the time i was always being asked a version of “how would you say this” – if it was trying to sell their own services, ask for a raise or apply for a new job.” Eventually I’d double down and build upon this angle of navigating conversations when you feel like a deer in headlights.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I used to approach grieving families to consider tissue donation moments after their loved one had died. It’s a very awkward conversation no one wants to have. And what I learned are 3 core principles to make sure every decision was the right choice for them without a hint of pressure even when it was time sensitive.

These 3 core principles were:
1. THAT I FOCUSED ON CREATING AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE THEY FELT COMFORTABLE ENOUGH TO TALK TO ME,
2. THAT THEY HAD THE RIGHT INFORMATION TO MAKE A DECISION,
AND 3. THAT THEY MADE A DECISION AT THE RIGHT TIME.

After serving hundreds of families through the donation process, my own family would pack up and move across country where I started a new kind of job. A stay at home mom of 5 kids under 7.

During that time, my small business friends would ask me, how to land their next client when their work had run out.

or how to talk about their price with the right people who could afford them all without coming across salesy.

or simply, how to “get their name out there”.

To my amazement, applying these 3 core principles, worked even in business from the florist in business for 25 years to the newbie copywriter

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Id’ really only rotate between a few things. lets go to the pool and lay around in the sun all day! and come home and rotate between take out and cooking in the kitchen mixed with late night hours out in the garage next to the beer fridge working on a puzzle.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Megan, Jena and Melissa, my sweet friends, for seeing my gift long before I did. Jon, John and Becky with the Charm Offensive Community for always supplying me with belly aches of laughter and challenging me to think about online communication differently. Also the stream of kind words and referrals from the people in my corner. And my one true love, for knowing when to come down and take a fussy baby from my arms when I was on a work call. love all of you, mean it.
