We had the good fortune of connecting with Shana Williams and Vernon Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shana and Vernon, what role has risk played in your life or career?
We think of risk as a paradigm of duality- Possibility vs. Peril, Courage vs. Fear. So, for us, it was really a question of whether we wanted to take the path of possibility and courage with endless opportunities or take the path of peril and fear with complacency. We chose the path of possibility and courage. Many call it, “Taking a leap of faith”. Choosing the path of possibility and courage has had its highs and lows in our life and career, but ultimately every low has motivated us, and possibilities became opportunities that only courage could have manifested. The path of possibility continues to open doors that fear could never have access to. Having courage has allowed us to walk through those open doors.
We can recall walking through the doors of a local elementary school with basic Concession machines (lol), unsure if we would secure the booking but we had the courage. That account led to several more accounts within that school district and a few other school districts. It was only three years later that we were walking through the doors of Verizon Amphitheatre (now Ameris Bank) and Lakewood Amphitheatre (now Cellairis) to provide our services for their Fall Concert Series’.
As we’ve navigated through the uncertainty of this pandemic, we have continued to choose possibility over peril and courage over fear. We figured out how to pivot and remain steadfast. We have gained some amazing business associates and continue to build our clientele. Choosing possibility and courage has brought us here, to this interview. We can only imagine where we’ll go from here.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
7 Event Planning & Promotions was manifested from two ideas that came together as one. Vernon wanted to get into event rentals and Shana has always loved to decorate for parties. The name 7 Event was chosen because “7” is the number of completion and perfection. The 7 is red because it symbolizes energy, confidence, courage, passion and power. Our logo/symbol is a rose, which symbolizes God’s love at work in the world with the red rose meaning passion and sacrifice. We believe that our name is what sets us apart from others as it encompasses who we truly are. Our energy, genuine connection to people and passion for what we do allows us to build long lasting relationships with our clients and business associates.
We have gotten to where we are today because we believe in quality over quantity and because we operate in love and light and integrity. It has not been easy, but persistence and consistency have been key factors in our resilience. We have learned that valleys (lows) are only temporary when you persevere. We have also learned to be careful not to surround ourselves with those who project negativity and limitations on us, but to surround ourselves with like-minded individuals who are encouraging and speak life into us.
The most exciting part about building our business is creating generational wealth for our children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. We are determined to clear their path to financial freedom. 7 Event will continue to be God’s love at work in the world for years to come.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
So, being that we are an ATL x NY Connection, we’re definitely going to have to hit a fire pizza spot and a bomb soul food restaurant at some point (lol). It would be interesting yet fun to plan because we’re vegan, so food-wise we’d probably take them on a Vegan Restaurant tour (l0l). We love to eat and Atlanta has some hidden gems. Our mix of Food & Fun would probably go a little something like:

A.M. Brunch/Mimosas at Gocha’s Breakfast Bar
P.M. Fun at Main Event
Tassili’s Raw Tacos & Top Golf Tuesday

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We absolutely have to shoutout our parents who not only birthed us, but birthed the spirit of entrepreneurship within us. As entrepreneurs themselves, we were truly inspired seeing them start their own successful businesses. We are grateful for how things have come full circle and now having their love, support and encouragement as we continue to build our own successful businesses. Their support comes in many forms, from attending our events and referring our services to giving sound business advice and even purchasing equipment. We appreciate them for all that they have done and continue to do.
