We had the good fortune of connecting with Shana Richardson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shana, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Growing up I was surrounded by people that showed me, anything was possible. My mother was a teacher and my father a solider. They made sure my bother and I understood the value of hard work. My father always had an entrepreneurial spirit and he instilled in us the same. My mother was a creative. She was the person everyone relied on for decor ideas, wedding planning; those types of things. Growing up in this environment lead me to want to start my own business. I just didn’t know how or where to start. Fast forward to 2016. My cousin who’s more like a sister to me, moved home. She’s started an event planning company previously and was looking to start again in her new location; Charlotte NC. Together we built Tabby Lane Events; a luxury event company named after out Grandmother, Tabby.
While I loved event planning, interior design was my passion. I remember my mother taking me to events such as the “Parade of Homes” where neighborhoods displayed their new floorpans; each home decorated with no penny spared. I remember thinking as a little girl “I want to do this one day!” This passion translated even in college; I would design custom headboards for our dorm rooms and custom curtains. In 2020, I decided to follow that passion and started Home House and Decor.
I love design and being able to do in two different industries has been one of my best accomplishments
What should our readers know about your business?
Home House and Decor is an Interior Design firm in Charlotte, NC. We specialize in bringing luxury designs to the everyday house hold. When most people think about interior designers they think custom, high-priced furniture, expensive. The average day to day person believes it’s out of scope for their lives. I knew when starting this firm that I wanted something that could appeal to anyone from the kindergarten teacher like my mother, to the CEO of a Fortune 500 company. This is why we offer different experiences for every level of decor needs. Our virtual packages are affordable for most. They were created for clients who want to work with a designer but desire a smaller budget. We provide clients advice on how to recreate their space and give easy DIY tutorials. We also offer traditional full service interior design. Whether purchasing a new home or flipping an older home; we provide a full service, tailored experience.
Starting a business was not easy! It took guts and a fearlessness I never knew I had. The fear of failure is real and it took every ounce of courage to ignore the fear inside. I just started! I know in school we are taught to have a plan, have it all baked out; well, I just went for it. I jotted down my business plan, created a website and started my social media. I immediately started getting clients and this taught me that in business, you will be your biggest critic, There were many days I felt like a fraud, thinking to myself “I’m not good enough,” “Why would someone hire me when they could get a Joanna Gaines or Shea McGee.” But hearing my clients testimonials kept me going. I had to learn to trust my talent! I had to remind myself of the many reasons someone would want to work with me. That confidence made all the difference. After only 2 years, I’ve help design over 50 homes, working with people from all walks of life; celebrity athletes, doctors, lawyers, teachers; even CEOs.
I have a long way to go and many dreams to fulfill for my businesses but the key is to keep going, and remember to trust your talent and trust yourself!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I’d like to shoutout my family!
My mother and father for instilling in me hardworking
