We had the good fortune of connecting with Sean James and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Sean, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The thought process behind creating dotado™ apparel results from my desire to blend my personal and creative life. As a socially aware graphic designer I want to create designs that spark thought and engage conversations. I also wanted to use the medium of quality apparel to be the canvas for those designs so that individuals who want to participate in those conversations and spark thoughts could feel confident and a part of a meaningful moment or movement. As a motorcyclist and car lover some of those themes come to life in our designs and apparel offerings; armored jean jackets.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Historical, social, and personal events inspire my art. My journey of overcoming rejections and being overlooked or ignored has gotten me to where I am professionally. While I do not seek approval from anyone; I seek to bring positive and thought-provoking art to elicit positive change or different perspectives to solutions to problems. I have found that if your intentions are well-meant your heart will give you the courage to pursue your dreams. It will give you the strength to ‘Dare to live every day.’

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I find places rich in historical significance endlessly thrilling, such as museums, national parks, and various cities and towns. Since I am from the New Orleans area I would hang out there. It has everything that feeds my soul; art, history, music, people, and food.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to thank all of our brand influencers and supporters! Without their support, we don’t get the exposure needed to grow the brand! Their love and attention fuel the creative flow needed to create design-inspired art. A big shout-out goes to Jay Electronica for allowing us to use a line from a verse in his song as a design.
