We had the good fortune of connecting with QK Douglas and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi QK, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I grew up watching my family start their journeys or build businesses that just didn’t get the traction, money, or resources needed for longevity. I hated that for my family and others in my community. When I went to law school and strayed moving with people who knew the systems of success when it came to business, it changed my whole thought process and world. I remember just being blown away at the ease of partnership, the flow of resources, and most important – THE KNOWLEDGE TRANSFER; I knew I had to do something and I started to get deeply passionate about it. I didn’t act on it or think about trying to start a business for myself until some time later. Meditation and just deep thinking and inward work helped me figure out my path in entrepreneurship and business and I am still on that path today.

What should our readers know about your business?

I am small business compliance and brand protection attorney and I don’t think a lot of people can say that. I became a business owner to bridge a gap of information that I saw small business owners struggling thru in creative spaces and early developmental and scalable stages. Compliance and legal structure are necessary, but it’s a step that is elusive for those who can’t afford big law help or do not know where to start.

I wanted those in my community and those who want to get into these dynamic spaces; to have access, and a chance to chase their dreams. They are no different than those who have access to bigger firms and in more traditional industries. I love creatives, entrepreneurs, divergent, and disruptive industries because they cause us as a community to think, reassess our dogmatic beliefs, and pay attention to the message/story.

I love helping women and underserved communities see more and do more with legal representation, coaching, and advice. I truly believe more representation in creative and innovative business spaces will greatly and positively impact the world. The diversity in mindset and access to agency is very needed.

I know it will change the trajectory of the future and I am committed to helping those who want to reach for more and create solutions in the world do so on legally solid ground. I simultaneously, want to help protect the creative works of those who drive inspiration and spearhead industries to think and move divergently.

I am truly excited to move and grow in my business and in innovative industries, I love the creativity and nuance of entrepreneurship. I see the visions and benefits of those who are working to make the space better and want to grow in business and quality. I think my clients’ industries will change the lives of the consumers who need and work in these spaces.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love the Paseo district, the plaza, and honestly, where I grew up on The Eastside of OKC. The people and community are real and historic in each area. My dad owned a convenience store in the Paseo when I was a kid. We would sit in there in the summers or weekends and do inventory or put candy and chips on the shelves. I saw firsthand what it’s like to own your own and lose it. I was so sad for my Dad, but that community was real and supported our family. I will never forget that area and now it’s a completely different vibe, but that sense of community is still there. I feel that in The Plaza district which I lived in myself for a while, failed and passed the bar there. I lived in that neighborhood and lived life in that area, just like growing up in the Eastside, those areas of my city will always have my heart.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?

Absolutely, my family, 100%. My sister and my Dad support me so much and go so hard for me it makes pushing thru not only easier but non-negotiable for me. I won’t be successful until they’re straight and have no worries at all. I love my family so much and I want to give back and show my appreciation for how much they cared and loved me. It’s my personal mission to make sure they know not only that I love them, but that I dedicated my success to their hard work and sacrifice. I’m so very grateful for them.

I will also say one of the best and most life-changing books I’ve ever read is The Four Agreements by Don Miguel Ruiz. I read it often and will continue to do so. It is a life-changing read and everyone should read it at least once.
