We had the good fortune of connecting with Panama Jane and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Panama, what’s something about your industry that outsiders are probably unaware of?
The thing that outsiders are unaware of is that all of the underground artist are always copied by mainstream creatives. You might see your favorite artist post something you think is so original or unique. In actuality they or their creative director took a concept from a unknown creative and added some tweaks to brand as their own. Unfortunately you can not avoid this happening all you can do is understand your idea was great and continue to push out dope work until you get the recognition you deserve.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
My art is that I am a BOMB ASS RAPPER! I specialize in combining Japanese animation with southern rap. I am known for infusing harajuku goth style with anime flare into my brand. I am most proud of my ability to be able to connect to anyone regardless of age and gender. I truly feel like my charisma is what sets me apart from others along with the graphics Ive collaborated with designers. I truly feel like my visuals set me apart from many other creatives when it comes to branding. Ive gotten to where I am today by honestly by having fun with my craft, because if your not enjoying what your doing then why are doing it. Anything is easy if you have complete faith. The lesson that I learned is to not get discouraged. I would want the world to know about my story is that Im always going to b myself and enjoy every step of the way.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I honestly would take them on a restaurant tour! I really love food and I love restaurants that provide a good experience. On Sunday it would be the Haitian owned brunch at Rock Steady. Tuesday would be breakfast at Barneys they are black owned and have a great menu for vegans and carnivores. On a Wednesday its disco and dance vibes so the destination would be MJQ. If we was going somewhere for drinks and grown vibes I would say James room. I would also take them to the High Museum for something artsy. There are so many places I would take my friends but these are definitely some of my favorites.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are many people that have helped me out along my journey who are still here today. First of all my mother she always supports me no matter what I decide to do. She also helps me learn from all of my mistakes. Second would be BadKlad he has me in so many ways as far as artist development. Third would be my mentor Redcoat who helped me develop my artist writing skills. Honestly every person I have encountered has helped me in some way and I am forever grateful to everyone that has helped. Soo BIG THANK YOU!
