We had the good fortune of connecting with Olusegun “Fatdawgbeatz” Akinlosotu and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Olusegun “Fatdawgbeatz”, what’s the most difficult decision you’ve ever had to make?
The most difficult decision Ive ever had to make was making the decision to give everything up I had going on, pack up everything I owned and move to Georgia to pursue a music career in 2014. Music has always played a major part in my life and has opened doors for me to travel and experience life in a different light.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My career has been filled with many ups and downs. Starting out as a drummer and playing in a band for many years, I was fortunate to have traveled and play in different states. In 2014, I realized that I wanted more out of music so I quit my job and decided to move to Atlanta to further pursue my music career. It was probably one of the most difficult decisions I had to make but one of the most rewarding decisions I’ve made for myself. When I first moved to Atlanta, I started a band called, “The Encore” and within a few months had the band playing in festivals, private events and local clubs all through Atlanta. In 2017, I decided to go back to school and enrolled at SAE Institute Atlanta. From there, I was really able to jump start my career as a producer / engineer. At one point I thought that I would not be able to finish school because of financial reasons but I thank God everyday for always providing a way when I couldn’t see one. While at school I was fortunate enough to have learned from teachers that were in the industry or had been in the industry for years. Being able to have teachers like that I learned a lot of valuable lessons along the way. Most important thing I learned was to never give up on your dreams. Not everyone is going to support or like what you do or how you do it but if you’re doing what you love and you’re open to learning from others, doors will always find ways to open for you. I am currently in the process of starting my production company along with building my clothing line F.R.E.S.H LLC with my business partner Bert Williams.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I really love ALL of Downtown Atlanta to be honest. Before the pandemic, Downtown Atlanta felt like it never slept. Some of my favorite places to go and visit are The Georgia Aquarium, Coca-Cola Center, Centennial Park, Atlanta Breakfast Club, Mary Macs Tea Room, Boogalou Atlanta, the Buckhead area and really anywhere where the vibes and energy is great!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
On our road to success we often have people in our lives, or meet people along the way who offer support, mentorship, love and encouragement to keep us motivated. First and most importantly, I want to thank God for continuing to lead my footsteps and guide me along my journey. Without him all of what I do wouldn’t be possible. I want to thank my Mom Taiwo Akinlosotu for always supporting and being there for me every step of the way. From being locked up, to being homeless, to graduating from SAE Institute of Atlanta, my Mom always made sure to offer her words of support and encouragement especially when I didn’t believe in myself. I would like to thank my Dad for making sure that music was a part of my life at a very early age. I would like to thank all my family and close friends that have truly been there and supported me by sharing my music, purchasing my music and downloading my music. I would like to give a very special shoutout to a very special woman in my life La’Kia Williams. She has been my biggest fan and supporter since the day we met and has always encouraged me to shoot for the stars. She pushes me everyday and doesn’t let me go a day without putting in some type of work towards my dreams.
