We had the good fortune of connecting with Nicole Davis and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Nicole, what’s your definition for success?
I define success by the number of people I impact. My goal as an spoken word artist and a former shy girl It is my goal is help others find their voice. This can be by helping them publish a book, creating a flyer for their upcoming event or writing stanzas that evoke a thought that leads to deeper self analysis. I long to be the person I needed when I was younger. The person who tells other shy brown skin girls that your voice matters, that your dark skin is beautiful, that beauty comes in all shapes and sizes. Making sales is great, likes on social media are nice, but helping to build someone’s self esteem and helping them find their place in the world is priceless.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I, Nicki D the poet am nothing more than a former shy girl who found her voice through poetry, Growing up I was the girl you typically find in a corner head crammed inside a book or journal. I had a hard time fitting in because i was very soft spoken and was easily overlooked, but I loved writing poetry. It was my judgement free zone and a way I processed alot of emotions. I never imagined that I would ever be confident enough to share my work with anyone, let alone publish multiple books. As I began to break free from my shell, and share my story through poetry others around me found the courage to break free from their shells as well. It was like a ripple effect. Then it dawned on me, that everything I went through, the insercurities, the heartbreak, the disappointments was to help someone esle. And I vowed never to hide in that corner again.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Im from Philadelphia, so it is always something going on. Whether hanging down at PennsLanding or hiting up Voices in Power, the best Open Mic Experience in Philadelphia. Becoming a Spoken Word artist has connected me with some of great people who do great things around the city. For example, Sanovia who host Movement Therapy on Tuesdays and Thursdays to encourage people to keep moving. Sol Garden is center for all things from book signings, yoga meditation classes, open mics and more. There is never a dull night in the city.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Nicki D the Poet would not existence without Ambition the Poet. Ambition is the first foster care poet in the history of America. Not only is he a national poet but he is known for his foster care advocacy, where he host panels where people from different areas in the foster care process are able to share their stories. Ambition is also poetry coach. His poetry drills helped groomed me into the powerhouse you see today.
