We had the good fortune of connecting with Katie Summerrow of Katie Max Art and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Katie Summerrow of Katie Max Art, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
To be honest, it has affected everything. Deciding to be a full time artist is a risk, releasing bodies of work to the public is a risk, and my biggest accomplishment to-date, hosting a ticketed, live, art auction, was a huge risk. I had to learn the only real risk is public failure, and fear of failure will never get me anywhere I’m proud of.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Thank you! In March of 2020 I lost my job due to covid when my company shut down temporarily. I had been dreaming of taking art full time but I knew it would be awhile before I could. It was a blessing in disguise being pushed out of the nest before I was ready, it forced me to figure out how to fly much quicker than most!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If I had to create the perfect day it would be taking Sunset Blvd from our house in West Hollywood all the way to Will Rogers beach (which has my favorite local view of the ocean paired with mountains), stopping at Erewon in the Palisades for an overpriced lunch, spend the day in the sun. Then the next day, head to Venice for brunch at Great White (a long wait isn’t so bad when you get to wait on the beach!) and after bouncing around all day we can end at The Palisades Bluffs to watch the sunset before heading home.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
So many people to thank! My husband, Preston, for always supporting my dreams, my art mentor @brynnwcasey.art for showing me the way and my friends for always showing up for me. I also really look up to Sara Blakely for her determination and courage and often ask myself “what would Sara do?”🙂
