We had the good fortune of connecting with Karli O’Sullivan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Karli, maybe we can start at the very start – the idea – how did you come up with the idea for your business?
I graduated college December of 2019 with a degree in hospitality…..and then, a pandemic hit. I lost not one, not two, but all three jobs offers I had lined up. I was at home battling with depression, anxiety, and all the other things that happen when you’re locked in your house, and I was burning through candles like crazy and thought “Hmm, I could make these.” I was looking for my next move and praying to my grandmother, who has been my angel and my guidance for the past 10 years, and one night during a battle with insomnia, I started creating an entire business plan. My grandmother used to sign off every email and phone call with “In Love + Light.” I like to think that she gave me the idea for my business. It brought me out of my depression and has given me so many life experiences and opportunities.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
In Love, There’s Light is a small business based out of my house in Marietta, Georgia. Every product has been curated and made by me. We make natural soy wax candles, goat’s milk + honey soap, and soy wax melts. All of our candles contain lead-free wicks and are scented with phthalate-free fragrance oils. They burn for 40+ hours! Our soaps are extra moisturizing for sensitive skin.

Starting this business was not easy. It took a lot of investment: both money and time. Somedays, it’s so hard to find balance and time. But I am so proud of this brand and it is my pride and joy. When I am faced with problems, I just try to tackle them one at a time. My husband always helps me keep a level head, and collaborating with him has developed our business so much. But while he is amazing, it can be hard balancing marriage and a business. A lesson I’ve learned is that he is my number one priority always. In the beginning, I devoted so much time to our business that I wasn’t paying attention to him because I was so busy working. There will ALWAYS be work to do. It’s okay to relax and spend time with your spouse and your family. Finding balance is the absolute key to being a small business owner.

The thing I want the world to know about my brand is that you can find light in anything. The past 2 years have been the best and worst of my life. I have faced so many adversities, but there is always a bigger picture. I want everyone who is struggling to know that the bad times do not last forever. You will get through this and come out even stronger. Pick yourself up, light a candle, and go find your next adventure.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love hanging around the Beltline. There is SO much to do! Whether it’s biking, throwing back beers at New Realm, or browsing the shops at Ponce City Market, you’re sure to have the best time. Centennial Olympic Park is also a great option because it’s within walking distance to so many things: the aquarium, the coke museum, the CNN building. There’s also Mercedes Benz and the National Center for Civil and Human Rights. If you’re less into city life, it’s easy to pop into the mountains and explore Dahlonega or Blue Ridge for an afternoon. My favorite thing is going to breweries around the city because there are too many to name; so many choices!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would be nowhere without the support of my husband and my amazing family. Everyone rushes to support me and there aren’t enough words in the English language to express how grateful I am for them. My husband helps make soap, my mom will help with marketing, and my dad helps at craft shows. This business would not have gotten off the ground without the support of my family, friends, and everyone else who’s bought our products.
