We had the good fortune of connecting with NEKTER and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi NEKTER, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
During the pandemic I realized how much I missed going to watch live music and dance, so I decided to teach myself how to DJ.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Techno is a form of underground electronic music. There’s plenty of DJs and producers who mix and make this kind of music. I think it’s important to find the specific sounds within the genre (along with emotions, energy level, and BPM) that speak to you. That make you want to dance. For me, I gravitated towards what is called ‘hypnotic techno’. As the name suggests, it’s a hypnotizing experience. One might not know where the first track ends and the second track begins. It’s all in flow.
Getting to where I am today took a lot of putting myself out there, reaching out to other people in the industry, showing up and networking, and spending loads of time in the studio practicing.
A couple important lessons I’ve learned along the way are A) always be working towards your goal. Do not let inspiration to hit you and carry the weight of the effort. It’s important to put in the work on a regular basis – inspired or not. and B) be yourself. As cheesy as this sounds, it’s so true and so important. Be you in front of the crowd. Play tracks that make you groove. Be silly, if that’s you. Be serious, if that’s you. Just be you!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If someone were coming to Atlanta and it was my job to show them around, I’d start with some coffee and walking around Piedmont Park. Then, I would take them to the Georgia Aquarium to see the whale sharks. After that, we would go have an incredible vegan meal at Herban Fix (shout-out to Atlanta for being so vegan friendly!). Afterwards we would hope & pray that Twisted Lines LLC is putting on a show so we could dance until the sun came up.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to give a big shoutout to my first DJ mentor, Ian Carney. He encouraged me to never give up, to enjoy the ride of being a student, and to always play great techno. Another thanks must go to all the support from Los Angeles techno crews who helped me really get my feet wet in the Los Angeles underground music scene. In Atlanta specifically I must thank Shakes of Twisted Lines LLC for giving me the opportunity to come to this extremely hospitable, beautiful, and fun city to play music for locals.
