We had the good fortune of connecting with Maya Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Maya, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
My initial thought was of course a traditional nail salon, with an activity center for kids to play while they wait on their Moms. That dream will still come to fruition but in planning I thought about the fathers needing manicures and pedicures and how often you don’t see them in the salons unless their wife is bringing them. I thought of my own husband who would rather me do his pedicures at home than go to the salon as well. During my search for a rental space, I found an ad for a barbershop looking for a nail technician. And that was it! What better space could there be to encourage men to take care of the hands and feet on a regular basis than a barbershop. It’s convenient and a comfortable setting for them. So I moved right in and things have been great. I’ve had several first time clients who would have never stepped foot in a salon and several who were avid salon goers. They appreciate the convenience for sure but even more so the comfort about being able to talk about having some issues with their toenails. Being that I worked for a podiatry company, I was very familiar with the need for routine foot care and how those visits are strictly for issues and not maintenance. I knew my knowledge and skill set on the conditions of toenails would come in handy. I have also recently become a Certified Global Meticulous Manicurist which has truly increased my skills and techniques to help clients heal many nail issues.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Still in the early stages of development, Beaucoup Nails has a bright future. Of course starting any business has its highs and lows and we are no exception to that rule. Our salon is all about luxury press on nails, manicures, pedicures, and enhancements. Having such a variety of services available can prove to be a challenge but with proper time management and setting client expectations we have performed quite well. I want the world to be on the lookout for more Beaucoup Nails locations in Barbershops and stand alone spaces with activity centers so parents can relax while their kids play in a safe, managed environment.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Being that I’m a mom of 5 and have 1 on the way, there are not many places we frequent just to hang out. We are swamped with school, sports activities, summer jobs, church, etc. The most we do is check out restaurants or bars from time to time. Maybe a new eatery we hear about for date night but we normally refer people to Voyage Atlanta, Discover Atlanta and Creative Loafing for what the hottest places and best events are in the city.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have to give a huge thank you to my instructors and mentors. Without the guidance, time, and encouragement of these people, I would not be the successful nail technician I am today. They truly taught me how to care for nails not just how to make them pretty. Mrs. Lannie Swanghim, Instructor at ISSN; Ms. Stephanie, Instructor from New Orleans; Linda, Owner at Lark & Sparrow; Lori Holloway, The Meticulous Manicurist; and Mr. Shola Ogunmoroti, Owner at 1 Kingdom Cuts Barber & Beauty Spa. Each one of these individuals has left a mark on my path to being a great nail tech and business owner. Most importantly, my Husband, Kelvin Jones Jr. has been the most integral part of me being able to put my all into my career. He has provided a stable home and work life balance for our family. His support is unmatched. Beyond grateful!
