Meet Mary Rooks: Owner of Mae Rooks Beauty, Makeup Artist/Hairstylist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Mary Rooks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Mary, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I think Willie Nelson said it perfectly,” I think I need to keep being creative, not to prove anything but because it makes me happy just to do it…I think trying to be creative, keeping busy, has a lot to do with keeping you alive.” 

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I am an artist, and my canvas is living, breathing, beautiful people. I use makeup and hairstyling to create. Everyone that sits in my chair inspires me, there is beauty in everyone. I have worked tirelessly, overcome obstacles and sacrificed to get here today. And this is only the beginning. I think my biggest take away from this journey thus far is to know your purpose and pursue that relentlessly. Love people. Everything is a learning lesson, don’t let one bad day steer you away from pursuing your dream. You will never stop learning, if you want to grow. And stay humble but know your worth!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I am actually very introverted, even though I love working with people. I like the one on one quality time I get to spend with my clients. So my ideal visit from a best friend would be very similar. I would love to cook for them, baked spaghetti most likely. The kitchen is the heart of the home. We can spend that time catching up and reminiscing. I love to curl up on the couch afterwards with a cup of coffee. We would definitely turn their visit into a photoshoot, so maybe a trip to Arabia Mountain where we could put on some gorgeous dresses and do what we love, create.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
There are so many! I am so blessed to have such amazing people in my life. Everyone at Studio 6480 Atl (@shanfotographia , @marciaphotographer , @thecamkilla , @studio6480atl) has been a part of my growth. Being in their presence alone pushes me to continue learning and growing into a better artist. My mentors and some of my best friends Ashton, @makeupbyashtonn and Whitney, @ wordswithwhitney have given me the courage to pursue my dreams. I wouldn’t be me without them.
