We had the good fortune of connecting with Luigi Balutto and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Luigi, what do you attribute your success to?
I must say that the most important factor behind our success is based on family, loyal friendships, love, and our great passion for grapes from the cultivation to the uncorking and tasting of an aromatic and delicious bottle of wine to enjoy and share with those we love. It’s our loyalty to family and friends and hard work to achieve high quality wines that stands behind our brand. We started out in 1991 with six people who share the passion for the cultivation of grapevines to the making of wines. Each of us come from farming families where the great respect and love for our land is deeply tied to traditions. Now, these lands are cultivated by Valchiarò winery, our business. Over time the deep desire to produce high quality wines took us on a long journey to learn about the most famous Italian wines and their making. This has taken us away from an only traditional winemaking to a radical change in order to produce high quality wines. We blend the traditional knowledge of winemaking with new technologies in order to reach constant improvements and offer high quality wines. In 2006 we moved the winery to a new, fully equipped facility designed and built with great attention to energy saving and respect for environmental issues. Our success and well established brand for high quality wines is also due to the attention we give to each and every part of the process of winemaking.

What should our readers know about your business?
Our business started out as a group of friends and family members who had the passion for the cultivation of grapevines and winemaking. This passion has grown into a successful business offering high quality wines with different characteristics. The one word that should be enough to explain our business and its success is QUALITY. The important geographic position of our winery and all its vineyards have played an important role in our business. We are located in the Italian region of Friuli Venezia Giulia in the most northeastern corner of Italy just few kilometers from the Slovenian border in a hilly area before reaching the high Italian and Slovenian Alps. The general climate conditions and humidity of this area force us to constantly fight against both grape mildew and oidium. This requires constant care of the vines all year round. Hard work, but very big satisfactions when harvest time comes. Harvest is one of the most important steps in this business. Huge advancements have been made in mechanical harvesting but we continue to believe in the painstaking and precision of hand picking. At harvest time every single cluster of grapes is pruned to eliminate possible damaged or unhealthy parts. This is very important to guarantee a high quality production of wines for our business. We are convinced that high quality wines can be obtained only from good healthy grapes and hard work. Founded in 1991, our business has remained in the astonishingly beautiful area where it took roots many years ago and continues to grow preserving the highest quality standards and maintaining our true love and passion for winemaking. Our business is one of constant work and passion. Without this we would not have the high quality business that we are proud to have today. Our constant love for our business has given us the honor of winning the prize of best white wine for our most appreciated white wine selection of “FRIULANO NEXUS 2019”, on the WINESURF online magazine, on the Guide”Vinibuoni d’Italia 2020″ with the crown (top award for a wine) and our business is present every year at the Italian Wine Festival VINITALY. All 6 partners dedicate every free hour to the business to assure the constant attention needed for our high quality production of wines. We offer wine tasting and when requested, tours of the winery explaining our methods and passion to guests. Come visit us and enjoy a glass of excellent wine with your friends in our beautiful northeastern corner of Italy.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The Valchiarò winery is located in the region of Friuli Venezia Giulia which has high mountains and the sea readily available with short day trips. There is so much to see for everyone’s desires and interests. Here nature is prestine and not yet spoiled by industries and buildings. Togliano di Torreano is the town where Valchiarò is located and it is near the ancient city of Cividale del Friuli. If guests who don’t know the area were to visit, I’d take them to visit Cividale which is an ancient historic town know for its treasures of art and many ancient buildings. We’d walk down the cobble stone narrow roads and visit the Cathedral and so much more. After our visit we could stop at one of the local wine bars for a glass of local wine and a taste of local cheeses or salamis on fresh crunchy bread. I’d take them for a walk across the Devil’s Bridge which connects the shores of the Natisone River, a turquoise colored river that flows through the valleys and hills of the area. We’d stop and see the beautiful panorama of the mountains and take some nice pictures for souvenirs. I’d take my guests on another day trip to visit Grado, an island with ancient buildings and beautiful sceneries and on the way we would stop in Aquileia and visit the ancient Roman Church and see the Roman ruins all through the small town. We might even have a break and have an ice cream while walking round the town. On our way back to the winery I surely would take them across the ancient Roman Premariacco Bridge after taking them for walks in the hills and maybe even finding mushrooms to later add to a delicious risotto. For sure we’d make a stop at my friend Dario’s little typical restaurant in the square and we have a delicious meal of regional meats and pastas made by Dario, a well known chef in the area. When night falls we could stop at some little towns if the season and date is right and dance to local music or just sit with a glass of good wine and enjoy music and the company of friends laughing and chatting for a while. In summer it would be possible to get a few friends and their families together and go for a picnic along one of the many rivers or lakes in the region or maybe a bike ride along the bike paths in the valleys and hills. If my guests like skiing or other winter sports we could go skiing on the Matajur Mountain not far from the Valchiarò winery or go trekking in the nearby mountains or further and higher Alps. For sure I would have many places to take my guests and many flavors and aromas for them to take back in their memories to remind them of the Valchiarò winery and of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region of Italy. It is always a pleasure to have guests and to show them our gorgeous region.
