We had the good fortune of connecting with LiConstance Hayes and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi LiConstance, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
My thought process behind creating a business started as a thought of something I can wear to homecoming. I just wanted something a little different than what I had come across. I wanted more than a t-shirt and that’s all I could find. I wanted something for myself and represent Alabama A&M University. I went to store the military installation and came across a cute jacket. It had cotton grey and maroon sleeves. I was like I can put some AAMU patches on this, it’s going to be fire. After finishing that jacket, I thought I can make jackets to  showcase all the Historical Black Colleges or Universities (HBCU). Being an avid supporter for HBCU’s, I always felt like they should be as visible as other schools. This is my way of creating that visibility.

Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?

What I want your readers to know about The Ideri Concept? It is owned and operated by a black woman, a veteran, and an AAMU Bulldog…ME. I create jackets (apparel) for students, alumni, and supporters in mind. Being creative is who I am. My imagination allows me to bring something to the market.

What makes my brand different is my goal is to highlight every HBCU or brand. Every jacket has a custom element to make each customer feel like this jacket was made for them. It is. My mission is to make sure they’re representing their HBCU or brand with pride. Though, I have a standard template, I also give them the opportunity to create original pieces for themselves.

What makes me most excited?
Highlighting every HBCU!! There are 107 with more reestablishing themselves. It celebrates black education excellence, pride, culture, and love in our community. I’m excited about showcasing EVERY SINGLE ONE.

What makes me most proud?
What makes me the most proud is watching an idea turn to a reality. As a creative, I have a million ideas, but to execute this one was special for me. The opportunity to experience the manifestation of an idea God gave me is unreal. I’m proud that I get to see something I made with my hands celebrated by my customers. I’m thankful..

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Sooooooo, I’m an explorer. If my friend’s are coming to the city, we would have to play tourist, because there’s so many new places popping up and I want to give them a try. Food, parks, hikes, sporting events are enough to fill their visitation time.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to shout God (Jesus Christ)! He has been my source. God gave me the vision. My family and friends! My family and friends has encouraged me, prayed for me and supported with this venture from the beginning.I have been blessed with being able to enjoy this moment with those who love me.
