We had the good fortune of connecting with Li li Nicols and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Li li, any advice for those thinking about whether to keep going or to give up?
This is a fairly simple question for me. You know whether to give up or continue by looking at the past. Ask yourself, where did I start this journey and observe where you are now. If there’s a drastic growth then you keep going but if there’s a stand still or decline, it’s time to throw in the towel.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Hi well I’m an artist and entrepreneur, as far as being an artist honestly, I’m still learning about what makes me different. Right now would say I can artistically deliver great performances and lately I’ve been tapping into the comedy community. I am most proud about having a women owned and ran studio in Atlanta.
This is a tough industry especially as a woman to gain respect and own anything as an artist. I have overcome so many challenges and setbacks. Lack of support and finances being the main ones.
I only overcame these challenges through my faith in God and continuing no matter how many people have told me to give up.
The best lesson I have learned is that you’re closer than you think and not to compare your story to anyone else’s.
I want the world to know that no matter what stereotype or stigma society places on you, you are writing your story not them.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Well I am all about good food. First we would start brunch off at Murphy’s in Virginia Highlands. They have good drinks and food and it’s not a party type environment.
Then we would hit the belt line and probably grab some drinks at The James Room, this is a cafe in the front and a speakeasy in the back .
For lunch after we’ve walked the belt line we would split a Korean Philly from Fred’s and then head home for a quick nap.
Now comes dinner, yes we gotta get the lamb chops at Divan and then spend the night out at MGQ or Whiskey Mistress.
If we’re feeling real up to it we’d go record at my studio livelisounds or go to after hours spots like Revery.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
