We had the good fortune of connecting with LaShanta Smith-Tott and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi LaShanta, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Well when I started baking I started with Cookies, hence the name “Cookie Crumbz”. I had this insane idea that I was going to offer an endless amount of flavors for cookies…traditional and non traditional. I thought it would be a good idea to have a cupcake to match each flavor of cookie. I started on the cupcakes and forgot allllll about the cookies and it’s been cake and cupcakes every since. But I’ll return to cookies soon…I promise!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Well being in the kitchen is my happy place. It’s where I learn to create, it’s where I learn who I  am and who I am not, it’s where I evolve.  My work doesn’t feel like work AT ALL! Ever! I say that to say this…Like anyone, I do have goals and ambition in this industry but the people I encounter are my main concern. So the “work” I do is simple… I want to make deliciousness for people. I want my cakes to be the topic of conversations. I want to grow and learn about classic pastries and French dessert because I want to offer more than cake at some point. But more than anything… I want people to know THEY MATTER, and that I appreciate them bringing their hard earn dollars to ME.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I’m such a homebody! All we’d do is eat. And we’d have to find places that I’ve never been because that’s what my friends would expect…but hmmmmm let’s see… We’d probably enjoy some great coffee and breakfast each day at different breakfast/brunch places. Hit the mall and do a little shopping at some point. Lunch and afterwards we’d freshen up and head out for some dinner and live music. This schedule would be on repeat but we’d swamp out shopping for bowling, a museum or and exhibit maybe, sky diving, bike riding, dance class, and maybe catch a live game.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My Granny! RIP She spark something in me long before I even knew it there. She spent a lot of time in the kitchen and she loved it!!! At least that’s what’s it taste like…lol Since then there has been soooo many people who have poured into me, pushed me, inspired me, supported me, prayed for me, and mentored me that I’m nervous to begin to name names because I don’t want to leave anyone off, but I’ll try… The most consistent man that has been in my life to date is Rev. Dr. Robert Rice, Jr. he was my first pastor and he always saw the best in me and did what he could to bring it out. Mary Bryant gave me tools to begin my journey long before I thought about making it a business. My two best friends Ashley and Noni who, without fail, are ALWAYS stepping in. Pastors Yaquis and Cameika Shelley and The Hand Of The Lord Family has been a consistent rock and support system. Last but definitely not least, my family! My kids are my help! lol Dahjia, Tyler and Trevor. From setting up, to delivering, taking orders, preparing orders, making cupcakes, icing cupcakes, making icing… you name it one of them have done it. And my husband Toxie Tott….my favorite critic because to him, I can do no wrong 😘
