We had the good fortune of connecting with La’Asia Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi La’Asia, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
Starting Elle Jae Essentials has been one of my greatest accomplishments. My business was born because there was a lack of access to clean beauty products for Black Women in my community. At the time, I was only looking for a solution for myself and my family members. I quickly found that there was a large gap in the market for the same products I was creating, in my own community. Seeing how frustrated other women were as well, I knew I had to take action!

What should our readers know about your business?
Since 2017, Elle Jae Essentials has been able to help 1000s of Black Women with sensitive skin find clean beauty products that are safe, healthy, and healing. Along this journey, I have found that the most important step in the process is to believe in yourself! When you can shift your mindset and allow yourself to believe that all of the dreams you have can become true, it’s easier to move as if they are already true.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Born and raised in Flint, MI, I have a ton of favorite spots! One of my favorite places to eat is the Flint Farmer’s Market. I love visiting, grabbing locally sourced food, linking with friends, and picking up fresh flowers. My favorite place to relax in Flint is Stepping Stone Falls. The water is calming and the walking trail is always peaceful.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I’d like to shoutout my first business coach, Ebonie Gipson. Ebonie is a champion for small business owners and specializesizes in helping entrepreneurs take the leap of faith and succeed in their area of expertise. Ebonie helped to guide me in the beginning stages of my business and create a solid foundation that I’ve been successfully building on ever since.
