We had the good fortune of connecting with Kyndall Peterson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kyndall, what role has risk played in your life or career?
Risks are ESSENTIAL throughout your career, and more importantly, throughout your life. Within the past two years, I’ve realized that every decision we make is based in either love or fear. When we constantly make decisions because we fear leaving our comfort zone, we’re anxious, or our ego is too fragile, we leave opportunities on the table. So, I constantly have to remind myself to push through fear, make decisions rooted in love, and of course, take the risk. There are always amazing things on the other side of fear. This mindset is why kyndallcreates even exists right now; I could have taken a job over the summer and had the safety of biweekly paychecks, but instead, I took a chance on myself and launched my first collection. I put my passion first.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Though I find myself using a wide range of styles and mediums, my main focus is sustainable fashion–upcycled thrift store finds and handmade crochet pieces. As fast fashion takes the world by storm, I find it important that we be more intentional in our consumer decisions. We have to question the types of clothes we purchase, how much we purchase, the material they were made from, as well as who made them and where. So much of the clothing sold by large brands is made from low quality, non-ecofriendly material by underpaid and overworked employees overseas. kyndallcreates is the antithesis of fast fashion, where you don’t have to choose between sustainability and fashion. You deserve quality material that won’t wreck the earth, and a genuine connection with the creator of your clothes.

kyndallcreates is still a relatively small business, but it is constantly evolving! My biggest challenge as of today is balancing business, college, and my other passions. But with graduation on the horizon, I’m excited for how this business will blossom when I can dedicate more time to it. As I continue on this journey, the most important thing I’ve learned is that when you start to feel fear well up in your heart, it’s a sign that you should probably do what sparked that fear. Pushing past fear is the only way to success.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My absolute favorite place in Atlanta is Little Five Points, hands down. It’s a quaint little place that has a little something for everyone, whether you’re looking for vintage cowboy boots, a slice of pizza, or eclectic house decor. We could honestly go to Little Five Points everyday out of the week, and I’d be satisfied. BUT, in case my friend wants to see a little bit more of the city, Piedmont Park, the Beltline, the High Museum of Art, and Ponce City Market are definitely on the list. Some of my go-to restaurants would probably be Slutty Vegan, Jeni’s Ice Cream, No Más, and Jinya Ramen Bar.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
As I continue on this entrepreneurial journey, I am being carried along by women who dedicate a large amount of their time to ensure that other women have the necessary tools to build wealth–particularly Rachel Rodgers, author of We Should All Be Millionaires and CEO of Hello Seven. Through her company, she helps historically marginalized business owners reach 7 figure profits and above by changing our thought processes, the way we value ourselves, and our business strategies. Her book and a recent training with her has changed the way I think about my business and money, and I am forever grateful for that.
