We had the good fortune of connecting with Kristal Kirkland and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kristal, is there a quote or affirmation that’s meaningful to you?
My favorite quote is “Life’s a climb, but the view is great”. To me this quote means that life can sometimes be hard but the hardship won’t last forever. There are always better days to come. I try to remember this when I have bad days.

I am most proud of becoming a full time Private Chef at 25! However, this was not planned and I just decided to deal with the hand that I was dealt. Being a Private Chef was something that I did part time and I always had another part time job. A job that was more secure so that I knew that I would get paid a certain amount every week. I had just started a new job as a cook and was only at the job a few days before I got a text saying that I didn’t need to come back anymore. It was confirmed from the head chef that the owner fired me because some of her staff just didn’t like me. I was upset at first but then I just decided to look for another job. I got tired of filling out application for jobs that I didn’t really want so I decided to Private Chef full time for a few weeks and see how much money I could make. A few weeks turned into months and now I am still here doing the same thing two and half years later. I guess it worked! haha What I learned along the way is that just because a client contacts you it doesn’t mean that you have to take the job or lower your rates for someone. Sometimes they might be better off booking another chef that would better suite them and that is okay. Another thing that I learned is that just like with anything else, being a Private Chef gets harder before it gets easier. But even after that it can still get harder. You just have to keep pushing and keep learning.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would take my best friend to Los Tacos! They have the best tacos in New York City in my opinion. I would also take her to Dumbo Park, Central Park & Soho to do a little shopping. Max Brenner’s has some really good Mac & cheese so I would take here there as well! If she came before corona I would definitely want to take her to a few bars in Union Square and a club called Pianos!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to Jen Sincero! Her books helped me changed my mindset on achieving my goals. Branching out and becoming a Private Chef on my own was super intimadting but after reading a few of her books all doubts went away. She taught me that there is no Plan B, so I knew that my plan A had to work!
