We had the good fortune of connecting with Kimmie Strickland and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kimmie, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I would say that I didn’t really choose an artistic or creative career but it chose me. Even though being creative was like second nature to me I never really thought to pursue it. I was definitely on the road to becoming a Pediatric nurse, I simply loved children and healthcare and still do to this day. I can remember every time there was something creative that we had to do at the hospital I was always right there to get the job done. Not to mention every time our department celebrated a birthday I looked forward to baking something really amazing for the staff. I can remember having a conversation with a former co-worker who asked me a simple yet mind boggling question, she asked “why are you here?”. In that moment I couldn’t give her an answer, she went on to say that I had so much creativity that I didn’t need to be here. I thought about what she said and still began to pursue nursing because that’s what “I” chose for myself. Still not listening and years went by and here I was at another hospital doing great and the unthinkable happened, our entire department was phased out and you guessed it I was out of a job. I tried so hard to find another one, I was in healthcare it would be a piece of cake right?. Well it wasn’t and I was quickly shown that I was placed into a position that forced me to do what I was meant to do and that is to be a cake artist and I haven’t look back since. So no, I didn’t choose it, it chose me!

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I absolutely love to create experiences for my customers and in the experience I work hard to make sure that not only will the customer have a beautiful cake but that it also taste good. I believe that’s one of the things that set me apart. I must say that it has not been easy as with any business there have been ups and downs but through it all I have overcome! So many lessons I have learned from having my own business and one lesson I’ve learned is that having awesome customer service goes a long way. I want the world to know that every order that’s created is created with love and care, I like to treat every order as if it were my very own.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many in my circle that I could shout out with every like, share and encouraging word but I would like to highlight my family and friends for promoting my creations. Every time I present a cake on my page it never fails that they are sharing and shouting me out for the world to see and not to mention ordering from me as well they are truly awesome and I love them. A very special shout out goes to my auntie Helen Robinson better known as “TT Gunny” this beautiful woman has encouraged me and pushed me like no other person in my circle. She always said that my gift would make room for me and it’s doing just that. I just hate that she is not here to experience my successes. But I know that she is looking down from heaven smiling!
