We had the good fortune of connecting with Kenya Parks and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kenya, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
Wanting a change for myself is what sparked the creation of my own businesses. Being in control of my future while helping myself and others became my sole purpose. This mindset keeps me going & encourages me to create new ideas and bring them to life. With this, remember to give yourself credit where it’s due with anything you’re thinking of pursuing. If you believe in yourself, your talent and your skill…do everything in your power to not let that go to waste. Especially if you know your craft could not only better yourself, but others as well.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My primary business is a joint venture with my best-friend Hannah Aryee. We created Breaking Resin, a crafting company where the resin is used to renovate furniture, create decorative home-décor pieces, and more. Our name is inspired by our favorite show Breaking Bad. My other businesses include Don’t Overthink–a clothing line created to serve as a reminder for those battling with their mental health and Miss Calypso Hair Collection, a soon-to-be revamp of a luxury hair line. Although it’s important to think about what sets you apart from others…I found that question always led me to start overthinking. So my main goal is to remain true to myself and treat my customers the way I’d want to be treated. That piece of advice has contributed to the success and positive feedback received from clients thus far and I’m very blessed for that. No business venture is easy, but that is what makes it all worth it. You can look at the progress you’ve made, and the obstacles overcome as motivation to keep going harder. I learned that it’s more than ok to fail, it just matters what you do with that failed experience. It’s also ok to ask for help if you feel like you’ve lost your creative direction and just need a push of encouragement. I want the world to know that even though I struggle to stay motivated each day, I never give up. Even when it may feel like the best option, it isn’t. You’ll thank yourself later when you don’t.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I’d definitely give a tour based on my favorite parts of Atlanta. Let’s imagine this tour taking place pre-Covid because that’s the only time I’d be doing all of this lmao. To start, your first Atlanta visit wouldn’t be complete without stopping by the Coca-Cola factory. Throughout the week, our events would depend on the weather because Georgia is extremely unpredictable. With that, I’d love to visit The Roof at Ponce City Market and Anatolia’s for a fun time and good drinks. Of course, we’d swing by Atlantic Station for its strip of restaurants and clothing stores. Next, Little Five points to see which creatives are out showcasing their craft. A great part about Atlanta is that it’s surrounded by art. So lastly, I’d like to simply walk around and enjoy the scenery and artistry around us.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
First off, a very special shoutout to my family. Especially to my twin, also known as my mother for always believing in me and supporting me with anything I’ve put my mind to. I wouldn’t be the person I am today without her. Next up, a HUGE shoutout to some of my squad Hannah, Whitney, Courtney, Lydia, Paul & Dillon. They’ve made a substantial difference in my life as a whole, but especially with my entrepreneurial and content creator dreams. This group consists of rappers, artists, writers, and more. Here are their Instagram handles so anyone can keep up with them and show love to their craft: Hannah- @hannah_the_creator Whitney- @pasjeantille Courtney- @prototype_the_xz Lydia-@tiggalyd Paul- @musical_wordsmith Dillon- @dillonjacksontv. To everyone mentioned and even those who are not–thank you for the continued support and encouragement to keep going every day regardless of the circumstances. This is our year, so let’s make the most of it.
