We had the good fortune of connecting with Kenya Johnson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kenya, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I have been caring for and growing my natural hair for 11 years and for the first 5 years I struggled with my hair in a way that affected my self-esteem and self-confidence. At least once a month when I would be struggling through an especially intense detangling session, I would think to myself, “If I ever figure this hair out, I am going to help other people do it too.” My passion is helping women understand their natural hair so they can let go of the stress, fear, and lack of confidence that comes from feeling like they have no control over their crown. Once I figured out exactly how to grow my hair as long as I wanted it to be and keep it healthy, I began sharing my journey on YouTube in 2016 for anyone who may have been lost as I had been. This led to me creating my natural hair coaching business in 2018 where I help women learn their hair, reach their hair goals, and transform their life.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I truly believe that understanding natural hair and being able to teach others to understand their hair is a gift that has been passed down to me from my ancestors. So much of my knowledge I have honed from experience and training, but the majority of my knowledge comes from within. This innate knowledge that I once questioned the validity of has helped thousands of women around the globe and I am truly thankful that I can offer this solace to the world. I know that when a woman feels calm, clear, and confident about her hair that that same energy will flow into everything else that she touches. And when you have struggled with something for so long and thought a solution wasn’t possible for you, and then it changes! It’s a paradigm shift. You begin to realize that the other things you never thought were possible for you are in reach. My end goal is not just to help women make their hair look pretty but to support women as they master their hair so they can give the energy they used to spend stressing, shrinking, and feeling less than to taking better care of themselves, taking up space and bringing their dreams into their reality.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
I love to discover the city I live in as if I were a traveler there. I guess it’s a leftover habit from when my husband I would move around every few years while he was in the military. We would always make the effort to get to know the town as much as possible before we had to leave again. If I had a friend come into Atlanta we would definitely spend our days at: – Sweetwater Creek State Park (a natural haven of hiking trails, sparkling water & serenity) – Le Petit Marché (a DELICIOUS neighborhood restaurant that is full of beautiful vibes from the staff who work there aaand it’s black woman-owned) – Modern Mystic (my favorite metaphysical/crystal shop – the selection of crystals, books, and spiritual home decor is unmatched) – Ton Ton Ramen & Yakitori (the best ramen and sushi in Atlanta – period) – And the rest of the time would be spent in my backyard as we soaked in the sun and caught up with one another 🙂 Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
CiCi Gunn of The Six Figure Chick changed my entire outlook on what was possible for my life. There were many times where I would question if what I knew about hair was worth sharing or if I was even helping anyone on this big ‘ol internet. CiCi taught me that my personal knowledge is valuable – and I had never truly believed that before her.
