We had the good fortune of connecting with Kay Thomas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kay, why did you pursue a creative career?
To be honest I don’t think I tried to. It was given to me by the Ultimate Creator and being a creative was something that I just couldn’t get rid of. I’m honored that He decided to give a little piece of himself to me. I’ve always heard the saying, “your gift will make room for you.” I can honestly say I finally have experienced just that for myself. Through understanding my purpose, and I am right where I need to be.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Hi, Kay The Creative here. I help small businesses visually stand out from the crowd with fun, chic, bold and creative designs. From album or EP covers, to life coach branding, the food industry to brand strategists, flyers, merch to websites etc… We’re all out here trying to win and be seen in the world and I’m just trying to be that girl to help you.
I am most proud of just doing what I love and not feeling guilty about it. Sometimes we fall into that, should I really be doing this? Should I get a “real job?, but honey this IS A REAL JOB. I stay up late, I wake up early, work countless of hours and do a lot of meetings. I think I work more now than when I had a 9 to 5. I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for God though and if it wasn’t for me believing in myself so that others could as well. A special thanks to my uncle’s friend Calvin, who introduced me to Adobe Photoshop when I was a teenager and my love for design has grown stronger ever since. Also my amazing clients and even the ones that were not so pleasant, they taught me things that I needed to know about not only myself and art but about being a business owner.
Being a creative is not easy, you feel so many emotions with every single piece of art that you create and it can be challenging. You feel defeated at times when it doesn’t come out just right. Sometimes you can feel alone, because others may not understand your work completely. I’ve learned to just be myself, smile through it all and I’m learning to train my mind for a different mindset. I want the world to know that my brand is about feelings. I want each client to have that feeling of “oh yeah, my brand is the ish!” I want them to feel like can’t nobody touch them in their field. I boost my clients up because they deserve it. I present that Yes To The Dress Feeling, but instead, it’s Yes To The Brand.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
For me and my best friend, we love music and a chill vibe. I would definitely take her to The Perfect Note in Hoover, AL. We both don’t get out much, so literally going to get fruit, cheesecake and something good to eat to sit at home and binge watch something on Netflix together and chit chat is our thing. Also there’s a spot in Birmingham, brunch by Simone’s Kitchen ATL on Sundays called Melanin & Mimosas where there’s always dope music, it’s a day party scene and I think everyone should experience it. Very nice vibe.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have three, if that’ ok?
First, I would like to shoutout my mom; she’s always so supportive of my journey of entrepreneurship and I’m so happy to have her in my life, and if I do nothing else in this life I want to make my mom happy and give her flowers while she’s here with us. I would definitely have to shoutout my friend, prayer warrior, neighbor and “fake auntie” Juanita Sims of WorklifebalanceVA; She’s my virtual assistant and accountability coach. I wouldn’t have got through a lot of this for my business this year if it wasn’t for her helping pushing me through. And lastly, my therapist because she helps me mentally to try to stay balanced as well, being a mom boss, you definitely need that support.
