We had the good fortune of connecting with Kattie Jackson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kattie, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I was born and raised in a small town in Upstate New York called Elmira. I grew up with a not so ideal childhood with abuse, neglect, and mental instabilities. It seemed there was very little chance to become more than just a small token in an even smaller town. Once I decided to take the first step in moving, at just 14, I moved from one end of the country to another with my father. Through all my mental health help and moving away from a toxic home, I learned to love the artistic things I still enjoy today. My upbringing has a huge impact on who I am today and how I conduct my business. Though it was one of the hardest times of my life, I wouldn’t be who I am today without going through any of it.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’m a wedding and family photographer working in the Atlanta area. I love providing portraits for both lovebirds and families to adore. It’s taken me almost four years while working with a friend, to really narrow down my style and goal as a photographer. I’ve learned along the way that time and life is precious and capturing that life is so wildly important. After losing my father and my son, I learned to never take a moment for granted. I always tell my clients to take the photo of your loved ones to cherish forever, even after they’ve passed.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
What fun! I’d start by going to the fun spots of Atlanta – Piedmont park because everyone has to see that gigantic beauty. Arabia Mountain for some classic unobstructed views of the mountains and clear sky, and also view those breathtaking sunsets. I’d HAVE to stop by the Aquarium. Though it’s packed, it’s such an amazing trip to take and truly captivating! I’d take them to my favorite restaurant- Canoe . The food is BEYOND mouthwatering with a view of the Chattahoochee River.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Monica Richardson with a Moments by Monica is not only a friend but a mentor. She saw my potential in the very beginning and asked me to be her second shooter. Now turned associate, her and I continue to work together at weddings in the Atlanta area. My husband, Ryan Jackson, for allowing me to pursue my dreams and always being there to aid in anyway he can.
